Attendance wasn't announced but was listed as 1802. It's the best crowd I remember seeing since the inaugural 2019 season. Tonight was cold and it was raining by the end of the game. An afternoon rain may have done a lot to kill a large walk up crowd. The first 1000 fans were given a York rally towel which they could immediately put to use drying their seats before they sat down. This was not a good start for the season for York as it was a home game and HFX had only won two road games all last season (non-bubble games). These two teams had tied each other four times in five meetings last season with the other game York winning 3-2 on the road in their first meeting last season. York have a lot of injuries this early in the season. Max Ferrari whom I saw inspecting the field before the game had knee injury and missed the game. William Wallace has a hamstring problem, Martin Graicier is undergoing concussion protocal so was not in the lineup. Mateo Hernandez has a broken nose and was not 100% so started on the bench, as was Diyaeddine Abzi who had a groin injury and came in at 61 minutes. Lisando Cabrera has visa issues and has not arrived from Argentina. Mouhamadou Kane got the start tonight as a forward as well as new Brazilian defender Eduardo Jesus. Oliver Minatel made his debut for York at 85 minutes after playing last season with Cavalry FC. Hernandez came in at the same time and Red carded less than ten minutes later. Debuting for HFX was Ryan Robinson who I watched play last season for Vaughan Azzurri of League1 Ontario. He came on at 76 minutes and hit the post ten minutes later. He played against HFX a few weeks ago when their team travelled to Southern Ontario for some pre season games after a trip to Spain was cancelled because of immigration issues...which were if their imports made the trip, they might not get back into Canada. Robinson impressed enough to be offered a contract. HFX scooped up two Vaughan players back in 2019 too. Aidan Daniels is now with HFX as well. I watched him over the years on Toronto FC III of League1 Ontario and then TFC II before he left for other USL teams. Tonight did see the debut of Osaze De Rosario as a forward replacing Michael Petrasso at 76 minutes. He looked good giving York another spark. He was given good write ups by the team during pre-season when he was listed as "A Trialist". His brother Adisa De Rosario will probably at this stadium Sunday for the home debut of Toronto FC II now playing in the new MLS NEXT Pro. He is a backup goaltender. *Late News tweet from the TFC II says for fans NOT to come to the games until further notice! I wonder what is the reason. One Soccer broadcast the game of course from their studio with Kristian Jack doing interviews at fieldside. Eoin O'Callaghan, the VP of Content and Communication Strategy for York called the game on radio for 'Sauga 960 with Jessica Lisi (soccer player formally with Woodbridge Strikers of League1 Ontario and the Canadian National team) on colour commentary. Before the game I did a walkabout around the field (which I couldn't do last year because of COVID protocol. The field has been replaced by field turf and the running track is gone (actually that was true last year as well). This year there are food trucks (I counted three with the York United merch truck selling swag) in the south endzone. That includes Sharman's Proper Pies that were on the concourse in the stands last season. The endzone also has some picnic tables where fans can eat what they've bought and a small six row metallic stand of bleachers for the supporters who are part of the parade of flare carriers who enter the stadium by walking around the stadium outside the east fencing before coming in the south gate. The east side now has put the York 9 'racecar' seating (two rows with four seats per row) over there and it has cubicles behind them large enough to hold patio furniture including York 9 patio tables. The cubicles were put to good use as fans retreated into them when the rain got bad. It appears the back of the signboards are the sponsors of the Toronto Arrows rugby team and are easily flipped over when they host games. York's next game is next Friday April 15th at Clarke Field in Edmonton. The roster of FC Edmonton is made up of CPL players being paid by their own clubs but being 'loaned' to FCE because of their ownership situation where the league is running the team. York's next home game is the Friday after that against Cavalry FC; a team they've never beaten since the league began. With a full season schedule starting in April, most times the teams will only play once a week.
