Attendance was about 60 with this still humid and hot temperature even though it was now evening and the players needed water breaks. Both teams had played home games on Wednesday night. The bright sun in the west was not a factor in the north-south alignment of the field. Probably about half the crowd were cheering for ECFC. The NM supporters were not here tonight so no drumming nor singing; just a grumpy dad yelling for the home team to move forward instead of backpassing. *Ok I straightened out the name of this place after reading a tweet/instagram a few weeks ago. From the front desk of the building, a staff member answered me that the building which holds the swimming pool, gymnasium, and community rooms will still be called the 'Churchill Meadows Community Centre'. It has been open for just over one year. There's a sign for passing traffic with that name that won't have to be changed. It's the soccer fields outdoors that will be now be called something like 'The Mattamy Homes Soccer Fields'. Mattamy Homes is a huge subdivision home builder in the GTA. Of course that company already has the 'Mattamy Athletic Centre' in downtown Toronto which was once known as Maple Leaf Gardens. That complex is now part of Ryerson University---oops was renamed Toronto Metropolitan University earlier this year. League1 Canada commissioner Dino Rossi stopped by before the game and he'd read about the name change. The scoreboards have no ads...so far...and looked like they were financed by the club. Well this game was almost over competitively at the 10 minute mark. I was just wondering how high the score would roll up. With a big 3-0 lead by the half, I was surprised the first ECFC substitution wasn't until 78 minutes. I'd have though with a possible four hour bus ride (that's one way!) from Peterborough, there'd by the bait of 'I'll let everyone play if we have a big lead'. N Miss had made all six of their non-goalie subs (the length of their bench tonight) before then including three at halftime to stir things up. Referee David Barrie gave out only one card that I counted and that was to N Miss David Newman. The L1O site agrees but they show it was 29 cards rather than the '1' in the quantity column. Must have been a rougher tackle on ECFC Jordan Brown than I thought! Actually the minute number would be useful in judging a game for anyone not present. I'd seen Barrie as a fourth official in the CPL York vs Pacific game last night and the MLS NEXT Pro Toronto FC II vs Columbus Crew 2 game last Sunday so nice to see him tonight as the head official. I saw six ECFC guys (some or all were managers) in the GTA last night at York Lions stadium watching the CPL game. I'm sure some of their interest was in watching York back up goalie Eleias Himaras (the ECFC co-starting goalie) who didn't get to play. He appears to have taken the place of Matthew Nogueira who someone has pointed out has vanished from the club roster on their web site. Last year Quillan Roberts started all the games for one-year-and-out L1O club 1812 FC Barrie. I don't know how he played the game after he was red carded but his presence was listed on the L1O website at the time. This season Roberts missed some time playing for the Guyanese national team so good for both the club and the man that there is a back-up. Although I had never seen Electric City play, I recognized many names from their roster playing for FC London, and Blue Devils FC last season. Head coach Randy Ribeiro was an assistant coach with London last season. At the start of the season, the London head coach was to have coached ECFC but stepped down before the season began and an English guy took over without too much success. ECFC and Simcoe County Rovers have assembled all-star teams by picking the rosters of other teams for their first year. Only problem with ECFC is they listed only five of twenty on their roster born 'this century' (ie since 2000). That may be a problem in the years to come with the league having a restriction on those aged 23 and over. Contrast that with N Miss who listed 12 of 18 born in 2000 or later. ECFC better get those youth academy partnerships going quickly. Only thing I didn't like about Electric City was the kits they wore. White uniforms with yellow numbers are just about unreadable unless the players are near the sidelines and after ten minutes of action when the players start sweating it's even harder. If my description of their goals is a little vague, I couldn't be sure who got the assists even with a pair of binoculars. I don't expect it to be cleared up by the league capture of the game as the camera was pointing into the sun. These uniforms were Sanjaxx Lions (RIP) bad. Actually Sanjaxx did wear yellow on white in their time in the league and I remember choosing an alternate game to avoid watching them. This year after seeing Masters no longer ever wearing graduated pink numbers on graduating white to red kits (also unreadable), I thought the league had finally pre-approved all kits. I was assured by some of their players after the game that they wear black at home with yellow numbers! Great but for the road....black numbers on white even keeping the yellow lightning bolt would have been so much better. Electric City was the only team I hadn't seen this year. It's taken me 26 games to see everybody...some up to seven times. Now what? There may be enough time left to see everybody twice before the season ends. Seeing St Catharines in a game earlier today brings the 'only seen once' total down to nine. It may take some creative scheduling to pull it off. By the time I got home, all the Saturday games had finished. With only one game on Sunday, that result won't change the positions of either team in this game. North Mississauga's record falls to 4 wins, 10 losses, 2 ties for 14 points. Their goals for/against worsens to -21 (22 for 43 against). They are now in eighteenth in the twenty two team division. Electric City improve their record to 7 wins, 5 losses, 3 ties for 24 points. Their goals for/against is +7 (24-17). They move up to ninth place. Some message board poster reminded everyone that this was their first win on the road. Top six teams this season make the playoffs. Top twelve averaged over the next two years survive the division split in the Premier Division with the other ten in the Championship Division. Currently to be twelfth, you need 20 points. (current table results until end of Saturday night) I also scheduled a post game interview with ECFC head coach Randy Ribero. That means I've spoke to a coach/co-coach/assistant coach from every team the first time I've seen them play. Some of the questions have had to be altered as the begining of the season optimism has waned by Week 13.
Interview with Randy Ribero: (8 minutes, 40 seconds) (audio recorded by Rocket Robin) Your thoughts on today's game? How did you recruit your players? Did you hold open try outs like other teams to fill out your roster? Do you have any local guys and local youth team associations yet? How useful is it to have two quality goalies? How has the team improved since the rough go at the start of the season? Does the ownership still have ambitions to have a CPL team? How important is to survive at the top in the division split to Top 12/Next 10 by 2024? Did you ever think when you played for Toronto Lynx that you'd ever be a coach? What would you say to your old Lynx coach Duncan Wilde when you play Blue Devils FC?
