Attendance was about 60 on this brutally hot day with a bright sun in the south. Sigma had most of the possession in the first half and the ball rarely left the Wolves end. Sigma must have won the coin toss because they defended the south end so the Wolves goalie was staring into the sun and there was a breeze from the south that only seemed to come up when they were trying to clear the ball. Sigma could have made this game easier if they could have added another few goals in the first half before the directions were reversed. Wolves are in the middle of a four game road trip. They played a midweek game on Wednesday night in Oakville and now today's Noon kickoff. Dial back they'd be here at least an hour before game time and I'm sure they'd have to set off for the GTA by 9AM at the latest. Referee Melvin Christopher gave out only four Yellow cards today (two to each team) although both benches especially Roma Wolves were hollering out for more. Most popular was his scheduling of water breaks in each half. Even myself who was standing in the shade cast by the fourth official's tent and not moving except stepping away to take the odd picture was glad to dig my water bottle out of my bag for the breaks and a few other times. Worst play of the day was Sigma Daniel Stampatori not giving 10 yards on a Wolves freekick during second half stoppage time and earning his second Yellow card. Sure it was to stall the taking of the freekick but it was at least 50 yards away and doubtful that the Wolves players were much more ready. I had Stampatori making some key crosses and runs up the wing besides his good defensive plays. The shutout was earned by Dino Bontis. I counted him with one catch under the bar at 7 minutes but otherwise nothing to do in the first half but had more work in the second having to make some key saves even after Sigma's insurance goal. He's not tall among goaltenders but was up high enough to tip a few balls over the bar and jump into the crowd of players in the box to make some key catches on corner kicks. Easy to hear him yell “KEEPER!” when he warned his teammates that he was making the play. I'm sure he's having a better weekend than his famous father! Best non-scoring chances of the game were at 7 minutes when Wolves Matthew Wnukowski took a cornerkick from the left and Wolves Conrad Czarnecki headed a 12 yarder forward that the goalie caught under the bar. 18 minutes had Sigma Faisal Ghaffur take a low 25 yard shot up the middle that the goalie stopped and had enough time to pick up the rebound. 23 minutes had Wolves Daniel Cavaluzzo cross from the left and the ball hit Sigma Daniel Stampatori on the shoulder at 10 yards and deflect for the goalie to pick up. 26 minutes had Stampatori cross from the right edge of the box and Wolves Victor Kariuki deflected the ball back off his heel for the goalie to pick up on the left post. 39 minutes had Stampatori elude the same two defenders twice on the right side of the Wolves box then pass to Sigma Mohamed Alshakman who shot a 20 yarder just over the bar. 43 minutes had Alshakman take a 22 yard freekick up the middle and the goalie was able to fly over to push the ball away from the top left corner. 49 minutes had Wolves Gianluca Delpriore's freekick from the left edge of the box headed away in the 6 yard box. 54 minutes had Sigma Hilli Goldhar receive a centering pass from the right and his 15 yard shot up the middle was pushed wide right by the diving goalie. 61 minutes had Wolves Elijah Wanless take a 25 yard freekick from the far right that had the charging Kariuki head the ball wide left and his momentum knocked the left post off its moorings as he ran into the net. 64 minutes had Wanless's cornerkick from the right caught by the goalie on the left post. 75 minutes had Wolves Jake Kelly center a ball to Luca Danesi for an open shot from 15 yards that the goalie palmed over the net. Kelly took the resulting cornerkick from the left that the goalie caught in a crowd of players by leaping to the near post. 78 minutes had Kelly take a 20 yard shot that hit the top of the bar in the center of goal and deflect out for a goalkick. The next minute had the Wolves goalie make a huge sliding save on a low 18 yard shot from the right. 95 minutes had Kariuki take a long throw-in from near the right cornerflag and the charging goalie caught between the players waiting in the box. I had one more game to see today so didn't check the standings until I got home and by then the day's results were all known. With only one game on Sunday, that result won't change the positions of either team in this game. Sigma improves to 6 wins, 6 ties, 4 losses for 22 points. Their goals/for against of 23-21 is +2. They move up to eleventh in the standings...actually tied with Scrosoppi FC in points both after 16 games but placed behind them with one less win. Today was a good recovery win from their 2-1 home loss on Wednesday night against Scrosoppi who passed Sigma in the standings at that time. Later tonight, Scrosoppi would get beat away to Simcoe County Rovers in Barrie so they couldn't pull back ahead. St Catharines' record falls to 3 wins, 10 losses, 3 ties for 12 points. Their goals for/against of 14-31 is -17. They hold at twentieth in the standings. Top six teams this season make the playoffs. Top twelve averaged over the next two years survive the division split in the Premier Division with the other ten in the Championship Division. Currently to be twelfth, you need 20 points.
