Final Score:...North Mississauga SC.......3........Sigma FC..........1........
Attendance was about 120 at its peak in the second half. Most of the crowd were from the N Miss boys teams looking like the oldest was U-10 plus all the parents that were with them. I only saw two others besides myself with Credit River Cup scarves but it was a hot evening. The N Miss supporters were about eight but some of the kids joined them. Their chants were rated G with “Can you Sigma sing...I don't hear ANYthing” not offending any parents. The club got to play on their premier field, the one with the large scoreboard. The seating is portable aluminum stand sections so they only had as many as the other field but that could be changed for 'big' games but there was a game or practice at the other field during the first half of our game. Both pitches are the most modern of field turf. Sigma had been called offside at least four times by the 19 minute mark then held up and found it hard to break through. NM goalie Matthew Mattila stopped a rally at 75 minutes when Sigma Marcus Caldeira sent a cross into the box from the left and Jason Squeo twisted a header from 8 yards in the center towards the right corner of the net but Mattila flew over and pushed it wide of the post. 83 minutes had Sigma Joshua Miller race to save a ball on the NM left end line and crossed to Sigma Marcus Caldeira who tipped a 12 yarder over the bar. Just one of those nights! Referee Melvin Christopher gave out only four Yellow cards (two to each team) with him having not many reasons to get involved. My special thanks to N Miss Massunda and Byers for helping me fill in the assists on their goals. The game was being live-streamed on YouTube so I would have figured that out but I didn't realize how the camera work is so much better in these games than the cam-on-a-pole recording that most games have. This game was part of the Credit River Cup supporters group's four team competition. They use regular L1O matches between the four teams against each other to decide the winner. Current leader Pro Stars FC have completed their schedule with a record of 2 wins, and 1 tie for 7 points. They weren't even invited to last year's competition for being 'not really from Mississauga'. Simcoe County Rovers from Barrie who by L1O scheduling had all home games against the others are the invitees this year and hold a record of 1 loss, 1 tie for 1 point so they can't win this year. Sigma also had a record of 1 loss, 1 tie for 1 point up to tonight so they couldn't win. North Mississauga had only played one game until tonight, that was against Pro Stars which ended in a 4-4 tie. N Miss have a chance still with a record now of 1 win, 1 tie for 4 points so they have to win away to Simcoe on July 8th. One of the CRC guys that I saw tonight said the trophy wasn't here tonight but it N Miss hadn't won, Pro Stars would be presented with the cup at their next home game. Tonight's result was somewhat of a surprise to me as North Mississauga hadn't won in their last five games and their last game was last Sunday in Hamilton where they lost 10-2 against Hamilton United Elite. Interesting that NM David Newman bookended all those HUE goals. NM used one goalie for each half, five goals against each but neither one was Matthew Mattila. Good way to bounce back! The win improves North Mississauga's record to 4 wins, 6 losses, 2 ties for 14 points. That result moves them up from nineteenth to thirteenth place. Sigma hadn't won in their previous three games but their losses were to undefeated Vaughan Azzurri, then they had scoreless ties against 2021 champs Guelph United and new glamour team Simcoe County Rovers. Sigma's record falls to 4 wins, 5 losses, 3 ties for 15 points. With last night's other three game results known by the time I got home, they fell one spot to eleventh being passed by Scrosoppi FC but there are a lot of teams still to play this weekend. Top six teams this season make the playoffs. Top twelve averaged over the next two years survive the division split in the Premier Division with the other ten in the Championship Division. Big surprise was 'why was I here?'. Just a few days ago, Toronto FC II posted a tweet that tonight's game against Inter Miami had been postponed until September 14th with no explanation given. OK well a great reason for living in the GTA is there's usually another game taking place so I put this one in my planner.
