Final Score:...Woodbridge Strikers.......4........Scrosoppi FC.........2..........
A fan fight breaks out in the stands soon after the final whistle. Some players got involved but other fans and team officials held them back. It looked like it was between girlfriends of the two teams. A videographer was filming the incident with a handheld cam while dismantling his cam-on-a-pole device (the L1O cam-on-a-pole was on the other side of the field). This footage would have proved useful if the police were needed but it was broken up before then. He'll probably just erase this now unless a company is still making 'Girls Gone Wild' videos. Attendance was about 175 on this warm evening after many hours of rain earlier in the day. The game once again was played on one of their field-turf fields. (the same one as earlier in the season). A team official said at that earlier game that the players like this field better. This time the scoreboard was working so we didn't have to crink out necks behind us when they used their main-field scoreboard when this one wasn't working. No residual water left on this field. Great...except the main grass field had been rented out to a men's league who were stomping it up. I'm sure these are rented out months in advance so there's not much they can do. That field has seating for about 400 people. This field-turf field had seating for only 100 so people also stood on both sides of the chainlink fence including some outside the fence in the parking lot end and the opposite side beside the players' benches. Referee Melvin Christopher gave out eleven cards that I counted. He had given players many 'no more' arm gestures before letting the cards fly so they can only blame themselves. There weren't really a lot of sliding tackles so it was just knock-downs and dissent. Huge turning point was Strikers able to score that third goal just before halftime to create some breathing room. Scrosoppi had a lot of near chances of just a poor last pass giving up possession and a few offsides. Cyrus Rollocks and Jevontae Layne were their main strike force. Strikers Abdou Raouf Mohamed did that 'knocked down/get back up quickly' move one other time during tonight's game. When he moves on someday someone will write that he's like a 'Roomba vacuum' or has that 'Kip Up' like the WWE's Drew McIntyre. As this was the last game of the weekend, the standings will hold like this until midweek. Woodbridge's record improves to 4 wins, 4 losses, 0 ties for 12 points and they now sit all alone in eleventh place. Scrosoppi's record falls to 3 wins, 5 losses, 1 tie for 10 points and they now sit all alone in seventeenth place. Wow such a huge difference with Woodbridge leaping past Scrosoppi. The cut off to survive in the top tier is twelfth (taken over this and next year's standings) when the division splits from its unruly twenty-two team premier division right now. There's a playoff bound group (top six) who are making some space between the rest of the teams and a group at the bottom who are floundering, but there's a huge clump of teams still close where every result puts them over or under that magic twelfth place. I had wanted to talk to Nikolas Blaskovic but he had been Red carded so I thought I'd lost my chance when he had to leave the field. I asked a Scrosoppi team official who pointed him out to me waiting at the gate (not the one where the fight broke out). I asked him if he was related to the Blaskovic who played for Toronto Metros Croatia. What I thought his answer was is “Yes both my grandfather and father played for Toronto Croatia”. Now the Blaskovic I was thinking of was (Mario) who had a daughter named Tina who I watched playing for Toronto Inferno of the W-League (and a few games for the Canadian National team). No he didn't know her. I expect he must be related to Filip Blaskovic who was on the Toronto Metros-Croatia from 1976 to 1978 including the team that won the NASL Soccer Bowl in 1976. I asked if Blaskovic was a common name like “John Smith” in English. “No it isn't” he said. Filip was born in Yugoslavia in 1945. Mario was born there in 1946 but a different town. When I googled Mario I found that he died just last October and it listed that he had played for Toronto Croatia. His family had season tickets in the same row as me to Toronto FC when I was in row 7 of section 108 (the last half of my SSH years after I moved from my near aisle seat in row 6). I'd see Mario or Tina or other family members or friends over the years). Ironically I'd been in that “John Smith” situation a few years ago when I noticed that a leading player in the Men's L1O and the Women's L1O had the same last name (different cities so a long shot) and the name “Kovacevic” means 'blacksmith's son' in Serbian. No those two players weren't related answered the male Kovacevic. Now that is a common name!
