Final Score:...Sigma FC......3.......Windsor TFC......2.......
Attendance was only about 50 people. This was only the second home game for Sigma this season in their eighth game so far. I'd have expected with North Mississauga SC moving to a new facility, Sigma would have the choice of any dates they wanted but the City of Mississauga decided to keep the bubble up until mid May because they can rent it out as an indoor facility for something like 4X the $ than having it rented as an outdoor facility. I got fooled by the change in starting time from 2:00pm to 4:00pm so also ended up watching a U-13 game between Sigma and London TFC. Sigma appears to be in good hands as they won 6-0. I wasn't sure of the rules but the games are divided into quarters and the teams only change ends at each half. Also the players can be subbed off and then subbed back on against at least once as I witnessed that on a few occasions. Sigma U-13 pulled away with four goals in the second half as a combo of the strong wind at their back and the other team tiring. Attendance to this youth game was about 100 parents and siblings. A strong wind from the north west was a factor holding up goal kicks and making high clearances difficult for Sigma in the first and Windsor in the second half. Too windy for mosquitoes today was a good thing and easier for team officials to search for balls kicked over the side fencing to the forest in the east. Referee Bradley Doubrough gave out seven Yellow card (five to Windsor including the one to the head coach) and the direct Red to Sigma. Players and coaches were calling out for Penalty kicks but the ones he gave were the only ones that were deserved. All the Yellows I marked down were for complaining or kicking out. It was a warm day but not hot enough for official waterbreaks so thirsty players came to the sidelines during injuries when the trainer was needed. I was pleasantly surprised by Windsor as they came to the game in the Lambton College bus/coach for transportation and they had eight available subs. I've been looking at the L1O linescores and seeing their road games they get beaten often with only 13 or 14 players. As I asked their coach and a player today, it was about a 4 1/2 hour drive to get here (this city is west of Toronto so they didn't even have to enter Toronto and it took that long and this was a weekend so much less traffic and it still takes that long!). No wonder it makes road trips not too popular. That's 9 hours travelling time. This bus though had room for double the number of seats then people on it so there was room to stretch out. Also the team was on an uptick winning their first game of the season last week. Sigma improves to 3 wins, 3 losses, 1 tie for 10 points. While this was the first game completed today, they move from eighteenth to at least eleventh although there are still games tonight and tomorrow. There's a lot of teams in the middle of the pack in this 22 team division. Windsor's record drops to 1 win, 5 losses, 2 ties for 5 points and they stay in twentieth place at least for now. A good effort today and a win last week makes them a lot more upbeat than earlier in the season. Life is returning to normal as once again the field is back in the flight path of planes taking off from Pearson airport and they were whizzing by at 5 minute or less intervals like the pre-covid days. I'd never seen planes before with logos now painted on their bellies as well as their tail fins. Not just one airline either. **News told to me before the beginning of this game is that two Sigma home games have been moved from this Paramount location to Tim Horton's Field in Hamilton to be the end of a double header after the CPL Forge FC home games. Saturday July 23rd against Hamilton United and Saturday August 6th against Unionville-Milliken SC. Sigma won't be the first L1O game played there this season as Sat May 17th St Catharines Roma Wolves 'hosted' North Toronto Nitros after the Forge vs At Ottawa game. North Toronto Nitros also moved one of their home games to York Lions Stadium after the York United vs Cavalry FC match on Sunday May 29th. They lost to Vaughan Azzurri 1-0. About 400 (my estimate) of the 1267 at the CPL game stayed for the L1O game. Good promotion to youth teams (must have been 14-16 shown on the scoreboard). Sounds promising!
My post game interview with Windsor TFC head coach Valter Consenza 6 minutes, 03 seconds (audio recorded by Rocket Robin) What did you think about today's game? How are you getting more players to come out on these long road games now? What's it like playing in Amherstburg? Is there any co-operation between your team and the proposed CPL team in Windsor? What are the benefits to you with your relationship to MLS Toronto FC? Do you have any relationship with the University of Windsor? How important is it for your team/fans/Academy program that you survive in the Top 12 for this division split in 2024?
