MARTIN NASH ANNOUNCED AS NEW HEAD COACH OF YORK UNITED FC The former Canada international has signed a two-year deal, with an option for a further twelve months. York United FC is proud to announce Martin Nash as the club's new Head Coach. The 45-year-old has signed a two-year deal, with an option for an additional twelve months. Most recently serving as First Team Coach and Technical Director of Cavalry FC, Nash has built a highly-regarded coaching reputation since retiring from playing in 2010. “After a full and thorough process, I’m delighted to announce Martin Nash as the new Head Coach of York United Football Club," says CEO/President & GM Angus McNab. "We are very happy that Martin has accepted the position and I would like to extend special thanks to our partners at Cavalry FC, particularly Ian Allison and Tommy Wheeldon Jr, for their openness and support in allowing Martin to take this opportunity with our club.” “I’d also like to thank the candidates - both domestic and international - who participated so fully in our recruitment process and put so much time, effort and energy into their analysis, presentations and interviews." “Martin was simply the candidate who showed the greatest enthusiasm for our roster and had the most cohesive direction on how to take the group forward.” Nash, a native of Regina, SK, is especially enthused by the quality of players awaiting him in the York United squad. "I am honoured and extremely excited to join this incredible organization and to become an active member of the York United community," he says. "I'm hugely grateful to The Nine Stripes for affording me this opportunity and I genuinely can't wait to get to work. We have a dynamic and talented group of players who are hungry to win and I look forward to starting with them on the training ground." A determined, resilient and inspirational midfielder, Nash accumulated 38 senior caps for Canada across a 10-year period and scored twice. His international debut came in 1997 while he was also a member of the famous Gold Cup-winning squad three years later. At club level, Nash is a legendary figure - most notably in British Columbia. There were two stints with the Vancouver 86ers but he's best-known for the six years he spent with the latter incarnation of that club: the Vancouver Whitecaps. While there, he won two USL First Division championships (2006, 2008) and also went on to captain the side. In total, he spent a decade with the organization and racked up 285 appearances. He stepped away at 34, just five months prior to the team's debut in Major League Soccer. Nash did spend time with other clubs in Canada and the United States, including the Montreal Impact and Rochester Raging Rhinos (with whom he won two A-League titles in 2000 and 2001 respectively) while he also enjoyed stints with three English sides: Stockport County, Chester City and Macclesfield Town. Described by the organization as an "exceptional leader and role model", Nash remained with the Whitecaps after retiring in October 2010 and began his transition to coaching, honing his craft across various roles within the club. In 2013, he took charge of the BC team that claimed a silver medal at the Canada Games and that same year he moved to the country's capital to serve as Marc dos Santos' assistant coach at the Ottawa Fury, in time for their debut season in the North American Soccer League. His time in Ottawa is best-remembered for a magnificent 2015 campaign that saw the Fury finish as Fall champions and eventually reach the championship final. Facing a New York Cosmos team that featured Spanish icon Raul and 2008 European Championship winner Marcos Senna, the Fury battled superbly but ultimately lost 3-2 in a pulsating clash. Nash left Ottawa in 2016 and served as an assistant to Canada's interim Head Coach Michael Findlay the following year. He arrived in Calgary in May 2018 to work alongside Tommy Wheeldon Jr at Foothills FC as assistant coach and later that year - ahead of the inaugural Canadian Premier League season - was confirmed as First Team Coach and Technical Director of Cavalry FC where he's been ever since. Since the league's inception, Nash has been central in cultivating Cavalry's exciting and expressive style. The team's level of performance has been immensely consistent and, historically, they lead the CPL regular season table in wins (37), points (125) and goal difference (39), while they've also lost the fewest games (12). In Nash's three seasons with Cavalry, the team never failed to reach the postseason and were CPL runners-up in 2019. "I'm hugely thankful to everyone at Cavalry FC for their support and their kindness over the past few years," Nash says. "But, this is an exciting new chapter. It's thrilling to finally make that step up as a Head Coach, something I've wanted for a while. It's a special moment and I can't wait for what's ahead." -- Eoin O'Callaghan, Vice-President, Content and Communication Strategy P: 647-554-3644 York United 104-9929 Keele Street Maple, ON L6A 1Y5back to 2021 York United FC menu
