After regulation of extra time being scoreless, Sounders win 5-4 after the sixth round of Penalty kicks.
Attendance was announced as 36045 and we were reminded that is a new record.
The MVP was named as Seattle goalie Stefan Frei who earned the shutout for the Sounders. He was the obvious choice for all the saves he had to make and I would agree in that choice. He used to play for TFC from 2009 to 2013.
The game officials are given medals.
The Seattle players are given medals. The MLS Cup trophy is presented to Sounders owners Joe Roth and Adrian Hanauer. Seattle players then carry the trophy around the field and over to the north east corner for their fans in the top corner of the stands where most of their supporters had obtained tickets. The first song played after the game is Avici's 'Levels'.
Stefan Frei won the MVP. He thanked his team and the city of Toronto and Canada. MLS commissioner Don Garber thanked also thanked TFC and Toronto and Canada saying we're a soccer nation (!).
TFC had more freekicks and cornerkicks throughout the game than Seattle.
Sounders first three Penalty kick takers were their three substitutes. That worked as 2 of 3 times as they all shot low to the right corner. Roman Torres took a shot in the face and was almost subbed off scored the winning Penalty kick.
How will TFC players Justin Morrow and Michael Bradley recover? Bradley had his Penalty kick saved and Morrow hit the bar on his PK shot.
Fans in my section were complaining about TFC Sebastian Giovinco being subbed out during extra time as he would have an 'automatic' Penalty kick goal. Giovinco played 102 minutes which is longer than his appearance in the second leg of the TFC vs Montreal Impact playoff game. Fans wanted Tosaint Ricketts brought on but for who?
I thought TFC had the only chances of the first half.
With the season lasting the longest ever, the only thing for Toronto is it's finally over and there won't be a victory parade to freeze outside and watch.
The grass was given a pregame sprinkling even though it was below zero but the field is heated.
Seattle clinch the last CCL berth for American teams. FC Dallas qualify as the US Open Cup champ and also the MLS Supporters Shield. NY Red Bulls qualify as first in the East, Colorado Rapids were second in the West and qualifier and although Seattle was fourth in the West, being the MLS champions got them the last spot over New York City FC (second in the East). TFC have the guaranteed spot for Canada by winning the Amway Canadian Championship back in June.
The weather was cold but not windy. I was there by 5:00pm expecting some kind of subway or streetcar delay but that didn't happen so I realized I was far too early and the buildings on the CNE grounds were closed. I walked down to an underground parking garage at 5:30pm an stayed for an hour to stay out of the cold.
Tickets sold fast for the game even with me getting the preferred Season Seat Holders window. My row 7 had sold out at 10:01am on the day tickets were put on sale. The whole row was sold yet the row behind was empty so I bought my ticket there. At the game, row 7 weren't dignitaries like I was expecting. My seatmate was a SSH from Section 110 regular who bought this 'better' seat. Our section turned into a standing section but it was just as well to stamp around to keep my feet warm. Fans complained about evey TFC foul and non-call.
I was given a Continental Tire scarf by a sponser which I wore around my chin while keeping my TFC scarf under my parka. The best thing were the handwarmer packets I was given at a sponsor's booth. I kept them inside my mitts and their heat lasted the whole game and the walk to the streetcar. My feet were numb after regulation time. I'm pleased they lasted at least that long. They warmed up after the subway ride.
The crowd cleared out very quickly after the last Penalty kick. It was good for me as I was able to sit in a streetcar and catch an uncrowded subway at Union Station. This was helped by the Ultimate Fighting card at the Air Canada Centre had already ended and the hockey team was out of town although it turned out it be the midnight subway train by the time I got there.
