Mikelic Brace Helps Vaughan To 5-2 Result Over North Toronto Nitros 08/30/2016, 12:15am EDT By League1 Ontario staff Vaughan Azzurri continues to show their quality atop the east division table, taking down a well-organized and talented North Toronto Nitros 5-2 following goals from Marko Miketic (8', 11'), Brandon Mills (90 + 3'), Jarek Whiteman (3') and Jashua Mills (90 + 4'). "We had a real positive start, which turned out to be the worst possible case for us as we started to let the game get away from us and made it closer than we cared for," said Vaughan assistant coach, Patrice Gheisar. "We managed to push hard and finish the game strong, but they certainly made a good comeback after a three nothing start in the first fifteen minutes." Nitros pulled two goals back through Killian Elkinson (67') and Farzan Ansari (33') but it wouldn't be enough to grab any points. "We started slow and they got three quick goals, but as the game progressed we improved and we got two goals and made it close," said North Toronto assistant coach, Ilya Orlov. "It was a competitive game, and then in the last bit while we were pushing they scored two goals." The second half set up nicely for the contest, as Nitros battled their way back and looked likely to take advantage of a period of instability for the Azzurri. "We had a player come off with injury in the second half, and we were missing some of our core players down the spine of the team, but we fought hard to keep it close," explained Gheisar. "They certainly put forward a great effort to make it 3-2 and our guys showed great character to finish it strong at 5-2." "When we pushed for the equalizer, of course we left space at the back and they scored on the counter, which they put away well," confirmed Orlov. With five game remaining in Vaughan season, the Azzurri sit in first with 40 points - five points clear of second place side, Woodbridge Strikers. The Azzurri's next match will be against another challenger, third place side Durham United FA at Kinsmen Park, Pickering on September 1, 8 p.m.
