Clippers Curb Oakville's Progress With 4-2 Win In Kingston 07/18/2016, 6:15pm EDT By League1 Ontario staff Kingston Clippers again demonstrated their quality at home in matchweek 12, this time taking the head of defending League1 champions Oakville Blue Devils with a 4-2 result at Queen's University. "I thought this was another game that signified that Kingston is a fortress," said Kingston technical director, Chris Eveleigh. "You can't come to Kingston and think you are going to leave here with three points." "In the second half we defended like warriors, because in my opinion they should have scored more," he added. "I'd like to see the stats on that match. We did capitalize on the chances we had, scoring two of three in the second half. I'm obviously happy with today." Kingston's Kristian Zanette (1') put the home side on the board within a minute, and teammate Jeremy Arnold (19') added another before twenty minutes were up. Before the day was done, Kingston's Lucas Blain (69') and Andrew Martin (78') would add one each to complete four on the day. "Ultimately I am disappointed," said Oakville head coach, Duncan Wilde. "We've played really well in the last couple weeks, and with Sigma and FC London dropping points recently, a win today would have put us right back into the mix." "Today we just went right after the win, a tie does nothing for us," he added. "The first goal in fifteen seconds kind of shocked us because we just weren't ready for that, we didn't recover, and we didn't play for fifteen minutes." "From the fifteen minute mark though I thought we absolutely, completely and totally dominated the game. We had maximal possession, we must have had over thirty chances to score, and as has been going for us this season - they are just not going in." Oakville were able to realize some silver lining after a Felipe Vilela (63', 85') brace, bringing 2015's Golden Boot winner to eleven on the season - two away from Sigma's Leaford Allen at the top - but it was small consolation for either Vilela or the Blue Devils. "I was happy to get the two goals for the team, but I just wish we could have got the three points," said Vilela. "We've come a long way and we've been practicing well and playing well but it just wasn't there for us." "We didn't take our chances, and they got four shots and scored four goals. Of course I'm happy to get the two goals, but I wanted the win mostly." Oakville laid on the pressure in the second half, confining Kingston to very few opportunities to break defensive shape and creating chance after chance. "We played very well and created lots and lots of opportunities, but we're a little naive," said Wilde. "We've committed too far forward to chase the game, dug ourselves in a hole again, and got caught out on the break. At the end of the day they had four shots on target and all four went in. It's disappointing, but we carry on." Kingston defender Oliver Coren was upbeat in the light of the victory, and felt it marked a turning point in the Clippers' development. "I think coming into this game we knew that last year around this time Oakville had beaten us rather handily," he said. "They've been struggling a bit this year, but they are a really good team." "I think this was a game that should show people just how good we are because from start to finish I thought we were really dangerous on the counter, we defended very well, and to come away with a 4-2 victory I thought was a pretty substantial win." Kingston occupies fourth place in the east division table on 21 points and will host Pro Stars FC at Queen's University on July 23 (6 p.m.). Oakville is fourth in the west division on 17 points and will host Toronto Skillz FC at Sheridan College Stadium, Oakville on July 24 (3 p.m.).
