Sun July 3, 2016 League 1 Ontario--Woodbridge Strikers vs North Mississauga Panthers (from League 1 Ontario website)
North Miss Sinks Woodbridge Strikers 2-0 07/05/2016, 11:45am EDT By League1 Ontario staff North Mississauga Panthers went to Vaughan Grove on Sunday and handed east division leaders' Woodbridge Strikers their second loss of the season after a 2-0 final. North Miss started the more energetic of the two sides, and it paid off. Jose De Sousa (28') put the Panters ahead inside half an hour, while second half subsitute Jonathan Amoo (83') slotted home a cut-back in the final ten minutes to put the result out of doubt. The clean sheet was claimed by Daniel Gosciniak. "I'm very happy with that," said North Miss head coach, Rick Titus. "We've worked on team shape and working together defensively, shifting laterally and trying to pull the line up when the ball is put into the other team's defensive third, and it worked very well today." "We were cutting off their supply to midfield and forward line, and keeping their strikers under wraps. Tom Wrobel and Austin Bryan, our two centre-backs tonight, had a very good game. The back four played very well today, very secure and cut out a lot of plays." "Woodbridge is a talented team, a very good group, but I thought we did well to win tonight." Woodbridge did not show the razor sharp attention to detail, offensively or defensively, that has characterized the group of late. Head coach Peter Pinizzotto was bothered by his team's lack of thrust. "We didn't show up to play," he said. "A lot of guys just standing and watching the other team play, it was as simple as that." "If you don't understand where we are in the standings, and that teams are going to come here and try and beat you, that you cannot take a night off - I don't think we deserve to win." "North Miss deserved the win. They worked harder and wanted the win more than we did, it's as simple as that." With the result, North Mississauga moves into fourth place in the west division, level on points with Windsor Stars in third but behind them on the head-to-head tiebreaker. North Miss travels to Kinsmen Park, Pickering on July 16 (6 p.m.) to take on Durham United FA. Woodbridge Strikers still hang on to first place in the east after the loss, but have a slim one point advantage on second place team Vaughan Azzurri. The Azzurri also holds a game in hand on the Strikers. Woodbridge plays again on July 9 (7 p.m.) against Sanjaxx Lions at Monarch Park, Toronto.
