Sun July 3, 2016 League 1 Ontario--Vaughan Azzurri vs Sigma FC (from League 1 Ontario website)
Vaughan Azzurri Puts Sigma To The Sword With 3-0 Win 07/04/2016, 4:45pm EDT By League1 Ontario staff Former Canada U16/ U17 player Dayonn Harris (63') broke the deadlock in the second half between Vaughan Azzurri and Sigma FC, before teammates Mario Kovacevic (80') and Daniel Cramarossa (90') added tallies to secure the result. Vaughan's Jared Brown took the clean sheet on the day. "I thought the energy of Dayonn in the second half made a difference for sure," said Vaughan head coach, Carmine Isacco. "He came on and gave us something different." "I thought we managed the game well up to then, and that was important against these guys because we needed to not let them break us down. Dayonn offered a quick change of tempo, and hat's off to him - he did that very well." The loss marked only the second in Sigma's season, the first coming mid-week against an up-and-coming Toronto FC Academy side. "We haven't been as sharp around goal in our last two matches, which have been our first league losses, and I think we need to work on that aspect," said Sigma head coach, Bobby Smyrniotis. "We'll head back to the training pitch tomorrow, and our next match is Thursday. Sometimes it's good to get a quick game in to get up and move on." With Vaughan the only remaining undefeated team in the league, and Sigma one of the stories of the season as they sit in first position overall, the match was bound to be an engaging tactical battle. "I think these two teams were always going to have a tactical battle," said Smyrniotis. "We know each other well, we know all the players on the field, and we all know where we can neutralize things and where we can take advantage of things." "Vaughan did a great job of taking advantage, and deserved their win today." "We came into this today with the mentality of reading the game and taking what it gave us," said Vaughan head coach, Carmine Isacco. "I thought we would have a lot of success countering, and we had some. We did well on the defensive side of the ball and keeping a clean sheet, which created more opportunities going forward." "All year if you look at the stats sheet, we have given up a lot of goals. We knew if we kept a clean sheet and got the defensive side of the ball right that we could get forward with good ball movement and keep hammering at getting something in the final third. I thought we got those things right today." Sigma remains in first place in the west division, and plays again on July 7 (9 p.m.) at Hershey Centre 1, Mississauga against Masters FA Saints. Vaughan is currently in second position in the east division, and plays again on July 6 (8 p.m.) at Kinsmen Park, Pickering against Durham United FA.
