Sigma Goes Nine Matches Undefeated In League After 3-1 Win Over Clippers 06/26/2016, 1:00pm EDT By League1 Ontario staff Alex Halis (34') got a goal and an assist on the night as Sigma FC beat visitors Kingston Clippers 3-1 at the Hershey Centre on Saturday. Chris Nanco (10') opened the scoring after a tasty set-up from Halis, before Halis took matters into his own hands and finished just after the half-hour. Kingston's Joey Pineo (76') put the result in question after bringing the away side to within one goal of level terms, but Sigma's Marcel Zajac (89') popped up in the six-yard box to get the insurance marker one minute from full-time. "I think we did a good job first half today," said Sigma head coach, Bobby Smyrniotis. "It was a very good effort from our team, and we controlled a lot of the pace, created a lot of opportunities, and saw a complete effort from the boys in the first forty-five minutes." "We could have maybe popped another one in there somewhere, but think in the second half we did a very good job of moving the ball around," he added. "We missed a penalty shot, which probably could have opened up the game a bit more, and it gave the opponent a life-line, and they did a great job of getting themselves back into it." "Overall I'm happy with the guys. We're winning some good games now, and playing some good football, and of course the record shows it." Sigma remains undefeated in league play and on 27 points is six points clear of FC London at the top of the west division table. Sigma's perfect record also puts them in first position overall. "I think the biggest thing is we focus on everything one game at a time," said Smyrniotis. "I don't look at the table and how many games are ahead of us or behind us. We try and take things one game at a time." "We're in a unique situation, where we have some turnover of players in different phases, going to University or otherwise. Some of these guys will play ten or eleven games this season, and we're probably in the middle of that now, so we just expect them to get their best game in and not focus on where we are in the season." Sigma next plays Toronto FC Academy on June 30 (9 p.m.) at Hershey Centre, Mississauga. Kingston Clippers are fourth in the east division and with four points on fifth place side North Toronto Nitros they cannot be caught in this matchweek. "If we look over the past seasons we've been in the league, the first season we came here we lost 9-1, last season we came here twice and conceded four, five, or six goals, and this year it was 3-1 but it was close and we were unlucky not to get a draw," said Kingston technical director, Chris Eveleigh. "This is what we're trying to do at the club, and we know it will take time to get close to what Sigma is doing - we consider them to be the best in the country." The Clippers face a tough test in matchweek ten as they travel to German Canadian FC Stadium "The Cove" on July 2 (7:30 p.m.) to play west division second place side, FC London.
