Oakville Jumps To Fourth In The West With 3-1 Win Over Masters 06/20/2016, 1:45pm EDT By League1 Ontario staff Masters FA Saints and Oakville Blue Devils met in a cross-division clash at L'Amoreaux, and despite Masters taking the early lead through Allando Matheson (39'), a dismissal to Masters' GK Ljubevski and a twelve minute hat-trick from Oakville's Felipe Vilela (66', 68', 78') guaranteed the Blue Devils all three points. With his three goals on the night, Vilela - the 2015 Golden Boot winner - moves to seven goals on the season, two behind the current leader Leaford Allen of Sigma. "We missed a lot of chances in the first half, and when you don't score you get scored on," he said. "In the second half we came out the Oakville Blue Devil way, and got the goals." "I felt very confident and comfortable out there tonight, and it was good to help the team in that way." A focused start from both sides resulted in Matheson and Oakville's Robertson going close on chances inside the first half hour, but it would be Matheson to open the scoring just before the half-time break. A quick through ball in behind left Matheson with an opening at near post and he slammed the finish under Oakville GK Karman Saini. However, just after the break Matheson would need to exit the match with injury, and tides began to turn in favour of Oakville. A penalty call just after the half-hour mark led to Vilela's opener, and the dismissal of Masters' GK Ljubevski, to be replaced by Danny Grant. Vilela quickly tested Grant, and was rewarded when he found space in behind the keeper to chip him and get his second of the match only two minutes later. After a strong opening frame, Masters were suddenly with their backs against the walls. Vilela latched on to a tidy ball in from the right flank with just over ten minutes remaining, redirecting his third of the night and a match winner. "It's nice to see Felipe get on the score sheet because I think he's been playing great this season, probably better than last season but he just hasn't been getting the goals," said Oakville head coach, Duncan Wilde. "Hopefully that's a nice stepping stone for him." Masters are back to the pitch quickly this week with a June 21 (6:30 p.m.) L1 Cup second round match-up with Toronto Skillz at L'Amoreaux. Oakville has more time to prepare, next lining out to face North Toronto Nitros on June 26 (3 p.m.) at Sheridan College, Oakville. With the result, Oakville is now in fourth position on eleven points - two behind Windsor Stars, but with one less match played. "We came looking for three points because we are looking to get our season going a little bit better than we've been doing," said Wilde. "At this point, results are very important so that we can keep in touch with the leaders that are doing really well." "We made some changes at half-time and completely changed the system, went with a second striker, and concentrated on moving the ball quicker and keeping it on the ground," he added. "We needed some good fortune and the penalty got us back in. I don't think we looked back from there."
