Late Strikes By Vaughan's Harris And Lowe Break Durham's Undefeated Streak 06/05/2016, 8:15pm EDT By League1 Ontario staff Vaughan's Dayonn Harris (65') and Shiquan Lowe (85') put away the game between the Azzurri and Durham United FA in the second half after a high-scoring first half. "They're a good team," said Vaughan head coach, Carmine Isacco. "The pace and energy of Dayonn Harris changed some stuff, and I think our humility - and credit to Durham because they kept the ball well and made us humble - made us an honest team again, which we should be and need to be all the time." "In the second half they needed to reconnect with the things that matter and they did that." Vaughan's Massimo Mirabelli (11') and Jonathan Lao (14') had the home side off to a dream start, but Durham showed their mettle when first Christian Moncrieffe (21') and then Stefan Lamanna (45 + 3') finished their chances late in the half. "We were terrible without the ball in the first half and that is not one of the ingredients of being successful," said Isacco. "Whoever you are you need to defend in this league because it's good teams and Durham is a good team." "You can't just cheat on fundamental parts of the game, and first half we cheated. We were lucky to get to the break at 2-2. In the second half we just challenged them a bit to cough up the ball and create things." A player with several Canada men's U16 and U18 teams camps and tournaments under his belt, Harris got the breakthrough just after the hour mark. A new player to the Vaughan side in 2016, Shiquan Lowe would ultimately put the game out of sight for the Azzurri with only five minutes left in the match. "We had two moments where we switched off and they scored. It's especially tough to concede on the counter, and they caught us," said Durham head coach, Sanford Carabin. "We knew they would sit deep and look for those chances to counter, and we told the boys that, so it's very disappointing to have conceded that way." "The fourth one we pushed a bit more to try and create chances but we couldn't get through them." "It's disappointing, but I told the boys I'm happy with the performance except for the four goals. We switched off on all four. It's part and parcel with this league, you need to realize you may dominate possession but the minute you switch off their are quality players that will punish you." With the win, Vaughan remain second in the west division, only two points behind rivals Woodbridge Strikers in first. With the loss, Durham were leapfrogged by Kingston Clippers and drop to fourth place - one point behind Clippers, but with a game in hand on Kingston.
