Encore Question of May 2, 1998.
Played at the Frog & Firkin in North York.

  1. Japan
  2. Ireland
  3. Jamaica
  4. Brazil
  5. France

Tonight I am in 6th place out of 16 players with a good score for me of 20917. I had some early help from Jeff until he left to play pool after the Jukebox round. We found out earlier in the night we were 'twinned' in frequencies so played as a team. I've known him from the Joe Grinders days. We tied for the lead in the TuneUp round with five others, and won the JukeBox round. It was the current event OnBeat round that he helped me out the most. I was playing as BADDAY which is his new name at this bar.

JARVIS had the lead with 23306 points. His table had the top five players. I put 50% of my points on the line expecting to have a question about a musician or band's national origins.

Question:...Dancehall has dominated the popular music scene of this country for the past decade.

No problem here as I've read about this for years in the free weekly paper 'Caribbean Camera' distributed at stores around Toronto. I knew the answer but would the question fool the 'group of five' table of JARVIS, MOLSON, FLAVOR, ENIGMA, and KELLY?

Correct Answer:...3. Jamaica

I'm right and finish with 31275 points. Nine people were right in total including the group so I didn't move up at all. The bar finished 4th in North America with a 33834 average and JARVIS won with 34959 points, good for 7th of Network players. Not a huge score but this must have been a very tough final question for other parts of North America? Hey, there's more than just reggae!
As only 12000 points were needed for the 2000 Players Plus points, BADDAY gets them.

Other games:
9:30pm...Wipeout...10095/15000...4th/15...1796th in NA...the bar was 524th in NA...a third guy cut in on our frequency and cost us 1000 points. MOLSON had similar trouble.
10:00pm...Playback (see above)...
11:00pm...RetroTV...14578/15000...1st/13...1000+ points...25th in NA (~13th on NA network final board, I'd written 5th but that was the preliminaries)...bar is 104th in NA...ROCKET wins. (I started the game as BADDAY but changed at the first break-too-late so was DIO same Pin number as me and finally ROCKET at 2nd break and spoiled a perfect game on the 11th question). I recognized about half of these questions from games in the last two years. ROCKET of Mr Mike's was also on the Network Top 20.

I didn't play with the regulars tonight as they were at a table. It wasn't what I expected to have to take them all on but it was satisfying to win the one game. I was driving my parents up north early tomorrow so planned on an early night. I was wearing my 10000 Maniacs t-shirt because Natalie Merchant was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live so that was more encouragement to get home early but did stop to say 'Goodnight' to them on the way out.
