NTN Encore Question of March 17th, 2012.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York, Ontario.

Headliner:...IRISH ARTISTS over Traveling Songs and 'Luck'y Music

Encore Question:...'Breakeven' and 'For The First Time' are pop hits for this Irish group:

Tonight I'm playing with my two boards with Rob COSMO/ASTROS, and Phil PLBAAB. I stopped playing the previous Countdown game so I could quickly set up a P+ account and let Rob have a second board. He couldn't set up a new account with ON J because the set-up wouldn't allow any space or hyphen in his name.

I'd gone done to The Bull & Firkin at Rob's suggestion as he was going to a party later. I phoned him at 7:00pm to say there was nowhere to sit and it was only 7:00pm. I took the subway up to Sheppard (almost home for me) and spotted Rob and Phil parking their bicycles so said we should try the Frog as usual. They were here last night and Phil won a best in North America ranking in the big game and earned a free beer. Tonight it was very crowded but we still found a spot.

Here's how my game went and my comments:
Tune Up...ROCKET...3500/5000..1st/7.
.............LITBOX...3500/5000...1st/7...our five and CHATZ win in a very poor round for us this week.
The Line Up...ROCKET...12500/15000...1st/7.
...........LITBOX...12500/15000...1st/7...I was 1 for 2 in guessing.
I co-win going 9 right and 1 wrong for a very good round this week.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...16710/25000...5th/7...COSMO wins round at 17750.
............LITBOX...16750/25000...4th/7. I must have taken four -250s this week.

...........LITBOX...21000/35000...4th/7...COSMO/ASTROS wins.
The Pound key round. I went 5 right for 1000, 1 for +250, 4 for -250, and 0 I didn't answer.

............LITBOX...33750/56250...4th/7...I go for 9 for 10 for an excellent round and ensure the guys know my answers.

IRISH SONGS:...1. Ireland has spawned more than its share of rock bands. What Irish county does U2 call home?--Dublin...2. This Grammy
nominated song was recorded by The Corrs:--Breathless (only Corrs song listed)...3. All of these (people?) are members of the Cranberries EXCEPT:
--Shaun O'Malley...4. Which band did Shane MacGowan front AFTER leaving The Pogues?--The Popes...5. These songs are all on Sinead O'Connor's
'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got' EXCEPT:--Lord Baker...6. This Irish pop group had a US Top 10 hit with their first single 'C'est La Vie':
--B*Witched...7. These albums are all Van Morrison releases EXCEPT:--Street Legal (other choices were Common One, Tupelo Honey, Astral Weeks,
St Dominic's Preview)...8. Which is of the following songs was written and performed by the Irish band Thin Lizzy?--The Boys Are Back In Town
...9 Which animals were NOT mentioned in the 'Unicorn' song by The Irish Rovers?--flying monkeys (other choices were long necked geese, chimpanzees,
green alligators, humpty backed camels)...10. Which Enya album featured her huge hit 'Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)'?--Watermark

Nothing to study for this week as the categories are too broad. Q1 was a guess from the list of counties but I guessed that U2 were actually from the city of Dublin. Cranberries have been in the news lately with a new album out. Q5 we didn't know. I went for 'Nothing Compares 2 U' thinking that was on a later album and it was the only choice I knew but Rob said no. 'The Emperor's New Clothes' was not a choice. From short title choices I think the other choices were 'Jump In The River', 'Feel So Different', and 'Three Babies'. The correct answer was from her 2002 album. Q7 Rob and I knew 'Street Legal' didn't belong--
I said it was Lynyrd Skynyrd (oops Street Survivors) and Rob said Bob Dylan. We've been to The Unicorn pub in Toronto a few times but knew we wouldn't be able to get in tonight because of the expected crowd.

Now the Encore betting comes up. Well 50% as usual.

Well first look through and I realize it's not a U2 song. I thought Jamiroquoi is English [Yes!]. Let me concentrate on that song 'For The First Time'. I remember seeing that on a list of Billboard year-end ranking songs for a few categories and realized I didn't have it so put it on my Boxing Day shopping list a year ago. Yeah it's The Script. I tell my friends and Phil has time to signal Ron CHATZ but he misread his hand signal. "I guess you own the CD?" Rob says. Yes. Maybe not as flinching as saying I have two B*Witched CDs.

I came home and looked for the video on YouTube. It's really the song 'Breakeven' I should have matched up as the lyrics "...break even, and pray to a God that I don't believe in". I found that a little unsettling. I'd seen the videos before. Real trivia was reading later on Wikipedia that the girl who starred in the videos was (U2) Bono's actress daughter.

'One Direction' is a boy band that is just being displayed for the first time at the music store I shop at this last week but I didn't recognize at question time. 'Westlife' are a boy band from the last decade. B*Witched was a girl group.

Correct Answer:....3. The Script

[NTN Extra Fact:...'For The First Time' is off their 2010 album 'Science and Faith'.]
