NTN Encore Question of December 17th, 2011.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York, Ontario.

Headliner:...GRATEFUL DEAD over Cream and Jimi Hendrix

Encore Question:...The first concert at San Francisco's Fillmore West featured The Grateful Dead and:

Tonight I'm playing with my two boards with Rob COSMO/ON J, and Phil PLBAAB.

Here's how my game went and my comments:
My ROCKET board started at 99 battery strength but died at the end of the last game (that's only 90 minutes) so I made a switch although
its replacement was only at 60 strength. I left all the notes I made on a table at home instead of having a last cram on the subway.
Tune Up...ROCKET...5000/5000...1st/6.
.............LITBOX...5000/5000...1st/6...we tie this round.
I don't think we had to guess any in this round. Phil got us the NOFX answer.
The Line Up...ROCKET...12000/15000...2nd/6.
...........LITBOX...12000/15000.
7 right and 3 wrong wasn't so good. Phil gets one more answer than us and has 13000.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...20290/25000...2nd/6..LITBOX wins round.
............LITBOX...20320...1st/6...I didn't take any -250s this week but didn't answer the Michael Buble song.
Opening Act...ROCKET...27040/35000...2nd/6.
...........LITBOX...27070/35000...1st/6.
The Pound key round. I think I went 7 right for 1000, 1 for +250, 2 for -250, and 0 I didn't answer.
Headliner...ROCKET...42790/56250...2nd/6...I think we all scored the same this round.
............LITBOX...42820/56250...1st/6
GRATEFUL DEAD:...1. From what city does The Grateful Dead hail?--San Francisco (hmmm foreshadowing the Encore question?)...2. Which of these is NOT
an album by The Grateful Dead?--The Big Pink (from The Band) other choices In The Dark, Blues For Allah, American Beauty, Built To Last
...3. The estate of the late Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead receives royalties from a/an:--ice cream maker...4. Which person listed was NEVER
a member of The Grateful Dead?--Mark Knopfler...5. What was the nickname given to Ron McKernan, original keyboardist for The Grateful
Dead?--Pigpen...6. Which track opens The Grateful Dead's 1970 album 'Workingman's Dead'?--Uncle John's Band...7. Who did not sing a Grateful Dead
song on 1991 tribute album 'Deadicated'?--Garth Brooks...8. Which was the title of the first album by The Grateful Dead to sell two million
copies?--In The Dark...9. A skeleton dressed as a _________ is on the cover of The Grateful Dead's 'Anthology of Song' book':--Jester...10.
"Sometimes the lights all shinin on me" is from which 1970 Grateful Dead song?--Truckin'

All my notes were on a table at home. Oops. My notes on The Grateful Dead were the most incomplete because they've had about 100 albums issued over their career. I had their studio albums matched with singles and the band members names and length of time served. The advantage I had over notes about the other choices is I only had started this afternoon.

The first five were easy enough to sweep through with me leading the call. Q6 I recognized the era when I was writing my notes. Q7 was Rob's suggestion. Yeah I said his career was just getting started. Q8 I start off saying 'Built To Last' then when Phil says their hit song 'Touch of Grey' I realize it was one album sooner--In The Dark. Q9 I didn't concentrate on their mascot. I thought it may be like 'Eddie' from Iron Maiden and be different each album so agreed with Phil that a 'soldier' was the best answer for these hippies = anti-war. Q10 surprised that Phil and Rob could sing a bit of this song. I only know the word 'Truckin'.

Now the Encore betting comes up. Well 50% as usual. I'd still earn 3000+ points if I was wrong. Just waiting for the question to be 'Which of these is NOT a double album?'.

Answers:

  1. Chicago
  2. Led Zeppelin
  3. The Beach Boys
  4. Jefferson Airplane
  5. The Who

I somehow took this question to be early in their career and this concert was in their hometown so I ruled out the English bands 'Led Zeppelin' and 'The Who'. 'Chicago' I thought didn't really get started early enough to be there. 'The Beach Boys' would be good but I'd have read about this before from the Beach Boys side of things as they have become about my favourite band. 'Jefferson Airplane' seems so obvious because they are also from San Francisco. My friends agree.

Correct Answer:....4. The Jefferson Airplane

[NTN Extra Fact:...Some attendees claim they can still hear the same concert going on today.]

That wasn't the greatest logic I realized later because the concert was held in 1968 by which time both groups were famous.

Big groan from me just like the Barbra Streisand headliner quite awhile ago and then the questions don't turn out to be so bad.

I took the subway again here tonight because walking three blocks to get to the subway is still tiring although I'm now walking as fast as I used to before my heart operation. Only two stops to get to this Firkin as opposed to twenty-six when I ride to the Squire & Firkin.

As I am taking so many types of medication at the current time, I stayed with diet colas tonight rather than have Moosehead beer. One last time to see barmaid Kirsten but tonight was her last night for working here.
