NTN Encore Question of September 10th, 2011.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York, Ontario.

Headliner:...UP & DOWN over Start & End and Black & White

Encore Question:...Who rips tawdry television shows on his 2002 album 'Up'?

Tonight I'm playing with my two boards and with Rob COSMO and Phil PLBAAB. Noone has bothered to get a 5th board for our table. Rob thinks Ron CHATZ at the bar will get us a good score.

Here's how my game went and my comments:
Tune Up...ROCKET...4000/5000...4th/8...COSMO, PLBAAB and CHATZ wins with 4500.
.............LITBOX...4000/5000...4th/8...I went 1 for 3 in guessing.
The LineUp...ROCKET...11000/15000...3rd/8...COSMO wins round and has 12500.
...........LITBOX...11000/15000...3rd/8.
7 right and 3 wrong was not so good this week.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...16480/25000...2nd/8...IDUNNO wins round but COSMO is still in the lead.
..........LITBOX...16480/25000...2nd/8...I took three -250s this round.
Opening Act...ROCKET...24480/35000...5th/8.
................LITBOX...24480/35000...7th/8.
The Pound key round. I went 8 right for 1000, 0 for +250, 0 for -250, and 2 I didn't answer for a good round.
I was surprised that I dropped a few place in this round.
Headliner...ROCKET...40090/56250...1st/6.
............LITBOX...40090/56250...1st/6.
Well a general questions category this week so it matter which Headliner they chose. No studying but I didn't have time this week anyway.
UP & DOWN:...1. This star's 2002 double disc release 'Up' featured pop and country CDs of the same songs:--Shania Twain...2. Who had a #1 hit
in 1980 with 'Upside Down'?--Diana Ross...3. This country music star's 2001 album is called 'Set This Circus Down':--Tim McGraw...4. 'Down on the
Up Side' is a 1996 album by:--Soundgarden...5. This band's debut album is titled 'Up The Bracket':--The Libertines...6. 'I Want To Be Down' earned
her the Best New Artist album at the 1995 Soul Train Awards:--Brandy...7. 'Up Around The Bend' and 'Down On The Corner' were hit songs for:--
Creedance Clearwater...8. His 'When The Sun Goes Down' spent the most weeks atop the country charts in 2004:--Kenny Chesney...9. The first single
of what 1980s-90s rock group was 'Upside Down' in 1984:--Jesus And Mary Chain...10. 'Straight Up Sewaside' and 'Hold It Down' are albums by this
Rap act:--Das EFX.

I got questions '4' and '5' wrong in this round and was fortunate to guess correct for '9' and '10'. That messed up collecting much in bonus points this week. For '4' I went with Montell Jordan as it sounded like a good title for a hip-hop artist after Phil says it wasn't Soundgarden. For '5' I went with 'Hoobastank'. The other choices were obscure. I only know of The Libertines for having the leader Pete Doherty who was always in trouble with the law for substance abuse problems in England until Amy Winehouse took his place in tabloid headlines. His only claim to fame in the Toronto papers was that he was a former boyfriend of the model Kate Moss.

Now the Encore betting comes up. Well 50% as usual. Well none of us is having a great game.

Answers:

  1. Peter Gabriel
  2. Phil Collins
  3. Neil Diamond
  4. Robert Palmer
  5. Vince Gill

Rob knows this right away and says it before I'd even finished dictating the question. I remember he had his album at about the same time as Shania Twain's title of the same name. I could back Rob and tried to think of the title of the song which was a about a talk show host.

Correct Answer:....1. Peter Gabriel

[NTN Extra Fact:...He sings about a crude Jerry Springer-esque program on 'The Barry Williams Show'.]

That's the title I was thinking of. I remember wondering when I was listening to it while doing yard work if it was about the actor who played Greg Brady in The Brady Bunch. He was on the air in infomercials at about that time pushing some CD collections of 'oldies'. Strip away the first part of the question and it is '2002 album--Up' which is what I should have concentrated on but I don't know if the rest would have been a distraction if Rob hadn't known it. Two of Phil's friends showed up in the last round and were crowding in at the table.

I'm right and stay in 2nd with both my boards with 52845. I earn 3000+ points for meeting the standard of 18000. I'm listed as 21st overall for all North America. The bar is listed as 8th in NA
...COSMO finishes 6th on this bar's Hall of Fame Board.
(NTN lists our bar as 8th out of 1594 with a 48210 average).

This was the first week I'd ever played Topix and Speed Freaks. I suppose my score for TOPIX will always depend on the theme of the week. Speed Freaks was hard to understand. I needed a modest 2000 points to get bonus points and let the questions go by after I made it but didn't realize that I was losing points being wrong on my other board and fell below that amount. I suppose the best players with the highest scores play at a bar with no one playing so they don't get beaten out of any answer. My strategy will be get the standard (although I don't know if it will be higher next week), stop playing and help the others get to that standard.

There was a free barbecue this week out on the patio and that must have cut into their menu purchases this week. They also had a band upstairs for the first time in months--'Who's Your Daddy' but I didn't check them out.
