NTN Encore Question of January 15th, 2011.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York, Ontario.
Headliner:...1980's #1 HITS over 1970's #1 Hits and 2000's #1 Hits
Encore Question:...They racked up a string of #1's in the 1980s that started with "That Rock Won't Roll":
Tonight I'm playing as ROCKET and LITBOX with Rob COSMO/ONJ, and Phil PLBAAB.
Here's how my game went and my comments: Tune Up...ROCKET...4500/5000...2nd/7...PLBAAB wins round with 5000. .............LITBOX...4500/5000...2nd/7...I tie for 2nd and go 0 for 1 guessing and have help on another one. The LineUp...ROCKET...14500/15000...1st/7...my two win round. ...........LITBOX...14500/15000...1st/7. I go 10 for 10 for an excellent score. I got help on one. Triviaoke...ROCKET...20550/25000...1st/7...ROCKET wins round. ..........LITBOX...20530/25000...2nd/7...I take two -250s this round and stayed out of one question. Opening Act...ROCKET...28550/35000...1st/7...my two win round but there might have been others. ................LITBOX...28530/35000...2nd/7. The Pound key round. I must have got 8 right for 1000, 0 for +250, 0 for -250, and 2 I didn't answer. Headliner...ROCKET...36550/56250...1st/6. ............LITBOX...36530/56250...2nd/6. 1980's #1 HITS:...1. The 1983 song 'Come on Eileen' was a #1 hit for:--Dexy's Midnight Runners...2. Ashford & Simpson had a 1984 US #1 R&B hit with this song:--Solid...3. Who's first solo album 1989's 'Cuts Both Ways' had the #1 hit 'Don't Want To Lose You'?:--Gloria Estefan...4. The rock group Boston's only #1 hit was the 1986 chart topper:--Amanda...5. 'Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground' became a #1 hit from this 1980 movie:-- Honeysuckle Rose...6. 'Nobody's Home' was one of three singles to go #1 for this singer in 1989:--Clint Black...7. Reba McEntire's 1989 cover of this Everly Brothers song hit #1 on the Country charts:--Cathy's Clown...8. He had his first #1 with 1981's 'All Roads Lead To You':-- Steve Wariner...9. Which song was NOT a #1 hit in the summer of 1984?--I Will Survive...10. This California based hunk had his first #1 hit with 1988's 'Streets of Bakersfield':--Dwight Yoakum
Two parts here. Songs that were 'Pop' or 'RnB' that at least crossed over and pure Country songs. I didn't follow Country back then but do a little better now 20+ years later. I got questions '5', '6', and '8' wrong--going with Urban Cowboy, Randy Travis, and George Strait on those questions. I knew the Reba McEntire cover song having read about it within the last year in Billboard but still I've never heard her version of it. (Rob said the answer first anyway). I also knew Dwight Yoakum's cover of the Buck Owens song having heard both of them--even a duet between them.
Now the Encore betting comes up. Well 50% as usual. I can still get this wrong and get 3000+ points.

I don't know this. It`s not Depeche Mode but the rest are all Country acts. Can`t go any better than to say The Oak Ridge Boys started in the 1940s (hits from at least the 1960s onward) so that still leaves three choices. I misread the question and think of the year 1980 and thought that`s the year that Alabama started having their hits. I have a greatest hits compilation of theirs and don`t recognize that song but don`t change and offer my answer when my friend`s ask.
Correct Answer:....3. Restless Heart
[NTN Extra Fact:...The Academy of Country Music named them vocal group of the year in 1989.]
I'm wrong but still win as ROCKET with 18275 points. I earn 3000+ points for meeting the standard of 18000. I finish 293rd in North America. (NTN listed our bar as 71st out of 1527 in North America with a 17414 average).
Here's how the rest of the bar did: Player preEncore Final Rank ntn.com rank ROCKET 36550 2 18275 293 553 LITBOX 36530 2 18265 294 555 PLBAAB 34380 2 17190 385 622 COSMO 33810 2 16905 347 641 ONJ 32870 2 16435 367 677 MADDOG 10180 - 10180 1220 1717 JEREMY 3240 - 3240 4927 3954 (ntn.com listed 5850 players with 5213 having a positive score)
I spent some time earlier in the day reading a list of 1970s, 1980s, and 2000s #1 hits but I have a Pop Music book. I expected some RnB and Country questions but not six of them and not the Encore IF we had five in the Headliner round.
The scores were generally low in this game so I wasn't the only one who didn't know the Encore. I think I'll take a few weeks off from playing this game and spend my computer time expanding my soccer reports from last year and getting my archives back up and reposted before the new season starts.
