NTN Encore Question of July 3rd, 2010.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York, Ontario.

Headliner:...RED, WHITE, AND BLUE over Stars and Stripes

Encore Question:...Which 'Blue' song was recorded by Gene Autry in 1940?:

Tonight I'm playing as ROCKET and LITBOX with Rob COSMO/METLCA, and Phil PLBAAB

Here's how my game went and my comments:
TuneUp...ROCKET...5000/5000...1st/7...our five win the round with 10 for 10.
.............LITBOX...5000/5000...1st/7...I go 2 for 2 in guessing.
The LineUp...ROCKET...14000/15000...1st/8.
...........LITBOX...14000/15000...1st/8.
I got 9 right out of 10 for a great round.

RED, WHITE, AND BLUE:...1. What band hit the Rock world with their pro-war single 'Red, White, & Blue'?--Lynyrd Skynyrd--2. His 'Clear
Blue Sky' was named Country Music's Album of the Year in 1996--George Strait...3. According to one of their albums, this Country Act
travelled down a 'Red Dirt Road':--Brooks & Dunn...4. WhiteChocolateSpaceEgg was released in 1998 by this female singer:--Liz Phair
...5. Which Elton John song begins with the lyrics 'Blue Jean Baby, LA Lady'?--Tiny Dancer...6. Which one of these 'Red' songs is
by Unwritten Law?--Seeing Red...7. The first line of Cream's song 'White Room' mentions that the room has this feature:--Black Curtains...
8. A young Elvis appologized to him for changing the arrangement of 'Blue Moon of Kentucky':--Bill Munroe...9. 'Red Letter Days' is a title
of a 2002 album by this rock quartet:--The Wallflowers...10. He had a #1 smash hit with 'White Lightning' in 1959:...George Jones
That's a lot of Country music in this Headliner round.

We swept through this round. #1 an omen as we'd heard 'Freebird' earlier in the night. I didn't know but thought Southern rock-pro war. #2 another guess although I have that buried deep in my memory. #3 back of my mind again. #4 I know, #5 Rob gets it first, #6 thanks to Phil steering me off the Jimi Hendrix song. 7 and 8 I know. 9 think I would have guessed that but Phil had it first. 10 looking for Conway Twitty before the choices (turned out to be not offered) but then saw George Jones.

Now the Encore betting comes up. Well 50% as usual. We've got the point standard but get this right and we have a great score!

Answers:

  1. Blue Velvet
  2. My Blue Heaven
  3. Blue Bayou
  4. Blueberry Hill
  5. Tangled Up In Blue

I don't know much about Gene Autry singing except for 'Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer' and cowboy ballads which I don't know. Let's see...Bobby Vinton, probably him because I know they sang it on an episode of MASH as a standard, Roy Orbison, Fats Domino, Bob Dylan. Well it has to be #2 then. I've got the decade for each of these songs so feel even better.

I have enough time to get over to the bar to tell the other group and convice Ron CHATZ to switch from #4.

Correct Answer:....4. Blueberry Hill

[NTN Extra Fact:...It was made famous by Fats Domino who recorded it over his producer's objections.]

I'm wrong and stay in 3rd as LITBOX with 26230. I finish 114th in all North America. The bar is 5th in North America with a 26249 average. I earn 3000+ points for meeting the standard of 18000. Phil wins at 26880.
(NTN.com keeps us in 5th place out of 1766 bars.)

Most of the other bars must have got this question wrong too. I couldn't find anything on the origins of that song until I got home to my computer. It appears Glenn Miller had the biggest hit of the song when it first came out.

I say I'm sorry to Ron but I was sure I was right. He admitted later he was guessing.

Now 'Tiny Dancer' is playing over the PA system.

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
