NTN Encore Question of November 21st, 2009.
Played at The Squire & Firkin in Etobicoke, Ontario.

Headliner:...THE 1960s over The 1970s and The 1980s

Encore Question:...Beatle friend Klaus Voormann played bass in this 1960s British band:

Tonight I'm playing with two boards as ROCKET and LITBOX with Rob COSMO, Sean METLCA, and Phil PLBAAB.

Here's how my game went and my comments:
TuneUp...ROCKET...4500/5000...2nd/5...COSMO wins round.
.............LITBOX...4500/5000...2nd/5...I guess 1 for 2 but know the other answers.
The LineUp...ROCKET...12500/15000...1st/5...my two boards win round.
...........LITBOX...12500/15000...1st/5.
I got 8 right out of 10 for a good round. A correct guess helped me out and one other mentioned by another player.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...17260/25000...2nd/5...COSMO wins round and takes lead at 17410.
..........LITBOX...17200/25000...3rd/5...I take two -250 in this round. I get help on three of them and many
questions I took for 600 to 800 points. The wrong answers were suggested by me and that hurt my friend's scores.
Opening Act...ROCKET...23510/35000...1st/5...my two boards win round probably by not answering a few questions.
................LITBOX...23450/35000...2nd/5.
The pound-key round. I must have gotten six for 1000, one for 250, none for -250, and three I didn't answer.
I though I had at least one wrong answer but that wouldn't add up to 10 questions=6250 score.
Headliner...ROCKET....38010/56250...2nd/5...METLCA wins round.
............LITBOX...37950/56250...3rd/5.
THE 1960s...Because the categories of different decades were so broad, I didn't study this week.
I have a good knowledge of the 1960s because even though it was a time even before I owned a radio,
there were a lot of countdown and oldies shows that outlined the period when I got older.
Questions I can remember: Surfin' Safari first hit for Beach Boys, Marcie Blane sang Bobby's Girl, The Weight was done
by The Band, Ummagumma album done by Pink Floyd, and a huge guess in the middle to keep the bonus points going:
album title in 1966 was by Sly & The Family Stone not the Youngbloods (apparently didn't chart from my book).
I missed questions 9 and 10 so it didn't hurt as much as missing the middle questions. Missed questions were:
Roy Orbison's song "Only The Lonely" was on some album (apparently didn't chart in 1962) rather than "Crying" and Doors
lyrics were to "Break on Through" rather than "The Crystal Ship" even though Phil said the right answer but I
just had my doubts.

Now the Encore betting comes up. Well 50% as usual. Let's make sure everyone bets the maximum.

Answers:

  1. Manfred Mann
  2. The Animals
  3. Them
  4. Herman's Hermits

I've never read this before! Hmm this will be a tough one but let's try it the hard way. I say "It's not '5' (I have their greatest hits on LP back in the 1970s and knew who the guys were), It's not '4' (greatest hits again and know their names if I saw them)...pause..."It's not '2' (got their greatest hits within the last two years). That left '1' and '3'. I would think that because Manfred Mann at least had a South African guy in it, it would be more likely this would be an international band. I thought Klaus Voormann was one of The Beatles friends from their Germany stay. Phil is saying the South African angle at about the same time I was. Well better than the Van Morrison (Northern Ireland) and his band.

Well this is a guess (maybe better than 50-50) but I happy with this. (winning bar Fletchers in Kalamazoo Michigan split their answers but they have enough players to do that).

Correct Answer:....1. Manfred Mann

[NTN Extra Fact:...Voormann played on the Mann singles "The Mighty Quinn" and "Ha Ha Said The Clown".]

My music book at home doesn't list Voormann at all so he must have been after the original band lineup but before The Earth Band era. The connection is listed on Wikipedia but I've never come across that fact before.

I'm right and stay at 2nd with ROCKET at 57015. I earn 3000+ points for meeting the standard of 18000. I finish 16th overall in North America. The bar is 5th in North America with a 55878 average.
(NTN.com kept us at 5th place out of 1773 bars).

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
