NTN Encore Question of September 19th, 2009.
Played at The Bull & Firkin in Toronto, Ontario.

Headliner:...MARRIED MUSICIANS over Boy Bands and Female Singers

Encore Question:...Which act never featured a real life husband and wife team as members?

Tonight I'm playing with two boards as ROCKET and LITBOX with Rob COSMO, and Phil PLBAAB/METLCA.

Here's how my game went and my comments:
TuneUp...ROCKET...5000/5000...1st/7...our five boards win the round with 5000.
.............LITBOX...5000/5000...1st/7...no guessing this round.
The LineUp...ROCKET...12000/15000...1st/7...we all tie for this round too.
...........LITBOX...12000/15000...1st/7.
We get 7 right out of 10 which was just OK. We had different answers for some of the questions
so could have done better.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...16980/25000...1st/7...ROCKET wins round.
..........LITBOX...16970/25000...2nd/7...I take four -250s in the round.
Rob got me one right and if I'd have listened to him I would have got two others for a few positive points.
Opening Act...ROCKET...24980/35000...2nd/7.
................LITBOX...24970/35000...3rd/7.
The pound-key round. I make 8 right for 1000, 1 right for 250 (2nd chance), 1 wrong for -250 and
none that I don't answer for 0 points...my best week ever since this format began and mostly because
I could call out the answer before the answers were displayed. Tenth question I should have had +250 but
my answer didn't take or I pressed the wrong button and ended with -250.
Headliner...ROCKET....46230/56500...2nd/7...our five boards sweep this round.
............LITBOX...46220/56500...3rd/7.
Married Couples...I didn't study this week as the categories were so broad. I couldn't make much of a list of
boy bands. Great I'm still too busy with the soccer season anyway.
There were two key questions for us going 10 for 10 and keep building our bonus points. A song that
Ike and Tina Turner did and a duo where I'd only heard of the guy, Carl Butler and the era but not his wife.
When I got home my book reveals I was thinking of Jerry Butler. Lucky me! Also there weren't any 'name
the song from this couple' questions.
Other questions that were no problem included Quarterflash, Edie Brickell and Paul Simon, Rita Coolidge
and Kris Kristofferson, Maurice Gibb and Lulu, Johnny Cash and June Carter, and the #1 duet with
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

Now the Encore betting comes up. Well 50% as usual.

Answers:

I read the possibilities out one at a time until I came to the right one. "Hey they only lived together". My father and I were having dinner with my second cousin and his wife this summer and I said she looked like Joanne Catherall (who was the blonde woman, not the one that Phil Oakey lived with) but they had only heard of the group even though they were both from England. I visited him in England just when Wham were starting so it was the right era and he wasn't too young.

Correct Answer:....4. Human League

[NTN Extra Fact:...Other acts featuring married couples are The Mamas & The Papas and Miami Sound Machine.]

They hadn't asked any of the headline round questions on the four answers and two extras listed here. I thought they might have trouble finding enough questions.

POMAN of the Buzztime board of NTN fans found that they asked this identical question on December 16, 2000...but that was almost nine years ago!

I'm right and stay in 2nd place as ROCKET with 69345. I earn 3000+ points for meeting the standard of 18000. I finish 5th overall in North America. The bar is 4th with a 68751 average.

Rob wins the game with 69840 points. That's Number 1 in this bars Hall of Fame at almost double the now 2nd place holder. We look over the 10th place name and see a score of less than 3000 so we understand why the bar says that EVERY monitor will be changed to Ultimate Fighting at 10:00pm.
(NTN.com leaves our bar in 4th place out of 1583 bars with a 68751 average).

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
Player	preEncore	Final	Rank	ntn.com rank
COSMO	46560 69840 4 15
ROCKET	46230 69345 5 17

OHJU 8500 8500	2576	2473
AMFM 7750 7750	2947	2731
ntn.com listed 6039 players with 5534 scoring more than 0.

I have lots of help in the later games.

I haven't been to this bar for quite a few years. My friends had forgotten the name but knew the location. It's in the same chain as the other bars we go to so I can't see why they chose this one as it was the same narrow selection of food that they complain about.

Three things most different about this bar. The threat of changing ALL the monitors to see the PPV, the annoying display of the monitors narrowing the screen as one third of the screen was taken up with the bar logo and an invite to play this game, and a patron who must have had Tourette Syndrom and yelled out "Ack" every minute and a half.

An omen to a good game? After the 8:15pm game Phil said to look up as a player named RUSH had made the Network rankings. I then mentioned that on the subway the night before while riding to a soccer game downtown I heard the guy sitting beside me playing 'Fly By Night' through his headphones (hey you'll go deaf). Just then this restaurants sound system piped in the same Rush song, 'Fly By Night'. Sure the group is popular here in their hometown of Toronto but the song is from 1977.
