NTN Encore Question of May 9th, 2009.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York, Ontario.

Headliner:...MOTOWN over Country Classics and Folk-Rock

Encore Question:...Which Motown star co-wrote the Mary Wells 1962 single "You Beat Me To The Punch"?

Tonight I'm playing with two boards as ROCKET and LITBOX with none of my friends here as they were busy with something else.

Here's how my game went and my comments:
TuneUp...ROCKET...2000/5000...3rd/3.
.............LITBOX...3500/5000...1st/3.
I didn't notice that Playback didn't start and there was another general Buzztime game scheduled. I had not seen that
happen at this bar (unlike the Squire & Firkin which I've been watching for a month). I quickly used the Manager's
Feature to switch the game over to Playback. It didn't seem like I had a choice but suddenly the game started asking
Tune-Up questions. I missed the first three questions and on my ROCKET board which I used to switch the games
I had to sign off and sign on again so missed the first six questions. Not a great start!
The LineUp...ROCKET...11000/15000...2nd/3...9 right and 1 wrong. My two boards win round.
...........LITBOX...12500/15000...1st/3.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...14750/25000...2nd/3...my two boards win round.
..........LITBOX...16250/25000...1st/3...I take five -250 in the round but get the other five right for the full 1000.
definately the worst I've done on the new format.
Opening Act...ROCKET...18250/35000...2nd/3...my two boards win round.
................LITBOX...19750/35000...1st/3.
The pound-key round. I must have got 4 right for 1000, 2 right for 250 (2nd chance), and 4 wrong for -250.
Another tough round but things like "Which 'Deja Vu' song was written by Neil Young?" I had to wait for one pass
to figure out what he might have wrote.
Headliner...ROCKET...31000/56500...2nd/3...my two boards win this round.
............LITBOX...32500/56500...1st/3.
MOTOWN music...I go 9 right and 1 wrong which was great but I got the 5th question wrong which wrecks the momentum
of building bonus points and I had to start all over again. An album title that turned out to from Tammi Terrell which
was a bit too much for me. Otherwise a question about some guy in the Motown studio band--The Funk Brothers, a guy
in The Spinners (as the other bands except The Weavers were just made up names), Four Tops being the group (and
possibly only Motown group displayed) that didn't want to leave Detroit when their label moved to Los Angeles, late
career album titles that belonged to The Temptations, first #1 Motown hit--Please Mister Postman (asked plenty of
times over the years in other games).

Now the Encore betting comes up. Well 50% as usual. I know it will be about Motown.

Answers:

  1. Martha Reeves
  2. Stevie Wonder
  3. Smokey Robinson

Yep for a number of reasons I know this but easiest of all is I've heard this song sang by the writer whose falsetto is even higher than Mary Wells and it immediately starts playing in my head.

Now if I didn't have the fortune of that happening which left me with 29 seconds left to think about the answer. Early Motown I expected it would be guys, not girls writing the songs...that I found the wrong logic as my music book shows that Mary Wells met Barry Gordy Jr when she was only 17 and came to show him a song she'd written for Jackie Wilson. Still Diana Ross would have been just out of high school. Stevie Wonder would have been about 11 in 1963. That left two guys and they'd already asked about Marvin Gaye in the last round--album written during his divorce. Also I knew Smokey Robinson did more than just sing with The Miracles but wrote and produced too.

Correct Answer:....3. Smokey Robinson

[NTN Extra Fact:...Robinson co-wrote the US Top 10 hit with Ronnie White of The Miracles.]

I'm right and win as LITBOX with 48750. I finish 18th overall for all North America....The bar is 90th in North America with a 21290 average...I earn 3000+ points for making this week's standard of 18000(?) maybe it's always this but I didn't notice as NTN was programmed for just another Buzztime game.
I finish 5th on the Hall of Fame board which is slightly better than last week's game when I didn't win. (ntn.com listed 1812 bars).

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
Player	preEncore	Final	Rank	ntn.com rank
LITBOX	32500 48750 18 49
ROCKET	31000 46500 29 64
BEAHR	11201 11201	1992	2225	(stopped playing/gone home)
(ntn.com listed 7765 players)

Not a great game but I was playing solo and wouldn't have got to play at all except for knowing the manager's code to switch to this game. Too bad it was after the game had already started.

Other games:...I start the evening with ROCKET at 4,289,300 and LITBOX at 1,970,800 Player's Plus points.

There seemed to be a lot of repeat questions so that's how I kept meeting the 6000 point standards.
