NTN Encore Question of January 10th, 2009.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York, Ontario.

Answers:

  1. Count Basie
  2. Duane Eddy
  3. Dave Brubeck
  4. Duke Ellington
  5. Tony Sheridan

Tonight I'm playing with two boards as ROCKET and LITBOX with Rob COSMO, Sean METLCA and Phil PLBAAB.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp...ROCKET...4500/5000...1st/7...ROCKET and Bill MADDOG win.
.............LITBOX...4000/5000...3rd/7...I split my boards whether Michael Jackson's "Thriller" had sold
over or under 50 million copies. Do they mean worldwide or just in the United States?
OnBeat...ROCKET...12500/14000...2nd/7...COSMO sweeps round with 9000 points.
............LITBOX...12000/14000...3rd/7...I get 8 right and 1 wrong. I had called out most of the answers but
I misunderstood Rod Stewart's birthday even though that's what I initially answered and didn't have time to switch back.
Jukebox...ROCKET...17488/20000...2nd/7...METLCA wins round but COSMO was still in the lead.
............LITBOX...17002/20000...4th/7...I got the Bob Marley questions as for both answers, only one Marley song was
listed in the choices. We voted for 'Folk Songs' at the request of Rob and they were both easy.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...23004/28000...2nd/7...COSMO wins round.
.............LITBOX...22498/28000...3rd/7...Sean gets us the Metallica lyrics for a high mark.
I took only one -250 this round.

Now the Encore question comes up. Jazz artists? Two of the choices don't really belong.

Encore Question:...This jazz legend's 12 Grammys included one for his band's 1967 album "Far East Suite":

I don't know this but concentrate but rule out the two I think don't belong. Duane Eddy was an early rocker and Tony Sheridan was a singer who had The Beatles as his backing band in their early days. Maybe there was a jazz musician named Tony Sheridan too? I say I'm going with Dave Brubeck because it just the era when he was most famous and thinking the other two were has-beens. Sean and Rob are talking. They're going with Duke Ellington. I have no problems changing as I don't really know. Only a few seconds to go! I'm over. Phil doesn't hear us say to change.
[Dave Brubeck didn't really have a 'Band' in the sense of orchestra but in modern times Dave Matthews has a 'Band'. I didn't have time to use that logic].

Correct Answer:....4. Duke Ellington

[NTN Extra Fact:...Sir Duke won just about every musical award in his storied career.]

I get home and found the album listed in my Billboard book as being "NC" meaning it didn't chart in the Top 200 albums for even one week. This edition of the book has now started listing albums if they've won Grammy's even if they don't chart. Like I said with the classic composers Encore question, let's hope they don't have another Jazz Encore for at least two years.

I'm right and stay in 2nd with ROCKET at 34506. I finish 8th overall in all North America. The bar is 10th in North America with a 30508 average...I earn 3000+ points for making this week's 21000 standard.
Rob wins and is #1 in North America and 7th on this bar's Hall of Fame. Certainly giving me the right Encore answer more than makes up for the mix-up in the Rod Stewart question. He feels relieved because of not catching my shout out of last week's Encore answer. Maybe next week it will be Phil's turn to recover.
(ntn.com left us in 10th place out of 1701 bars).

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
Player	preEncore	Final	Rank	ntn.com rank
COSMO	24676 37014 1 1
ROCKET	23004 34506 8 14
LITBOX	22498 33747 14 24
METLCA	22496 33734 15 25
PLBAAB	21161	x	10581	7880	1631
MADDOG 9022 13533 447	1136

(ntn.com listed 7630 players)

Other games:...I start the evening with ROCKET at 4,165,400 P+ points and LITBOX at 1,840,100 P+ Players Plus points.
7:30pm...Buzztime...ROCKET...1767/10000...5th/5...300+ points...I'm 4933rd in North America.
...............LITBOX...1774/10000...4th/5...300+ points...I'm 4925th in NA...METLCA wins. I'm here in time for the last four questions.
7:45pm...Buzztime...ROCKET...8854/10000...1st/6...900+ points...I'm 68th in North America.

Tough game but I look at my ranking across at North America and see that the game was too tough to get 900+ points.
Another mix up as Phil gave me an answer that would have got me over the 6000 standard but I didn't listen.
8:15pm...Buzztime...ROCKET...6988/10000...6th/7...900+ points...I'm 229th in NA.

8:45pm...Tuned-in TV...ROCKET...8734/10000...1st/7...1000+ points...I'm 35th in NA...the bar is 12th in NA with an 8318 average.

.............LITBOX...8919/10000...2nd/7...900+ points...I'm 62nd in NA...the bar is 9th in NA.

It takes me until the next day to realize that last night's Encore answer was given away in last week's Encore answer. "Sir Duke" was one of the choices offered last week. I step out of the bar into the snow and restart my MP3 player from where I left off on my way here. Alan Jackson's album 'Like Red From A Rose', song "Where Do I Go From Here (A Trucker's Song) starts with the lyrics from "Oh Susannah" which was one of the Folk Songs answers in the JukeBox round. I also remember saying when 'Pop Tarts' was given as a JukeBox topic to choose it because it would be about an artist like Britney Spears...so the correct answer was 'Britney Spears' but I didn't recognize the question as one of her song titles and got our group about 150 points.
