NTN Encore Question of October 11th, 2008.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York, Ontario.
Answers:
Tonight I'm playing with two boards as ROCKET and LITBOX with Rob COSMO/METLCA, and Phil PLBAAB.
My game so far had gone like this: TuneUp...ROCKET...3000/5000...5th/9...COSMO, METLCA, and PLBAAB win this round. ............LITBOX...2500/5000...7th/9. This round is a lot harder than what it has been since last year. My LITBOX box is not properly signed on so I had to restart after the first two questions. I had just got here from a soccer game and signed on in a hurry. I also split an answer on my two boards. OnBeat...ROCKET...10000/14000...3rd/9...COSMO wins with 8 for 9. .............LITBOX...9500/14000...5th/9...I'm pleased with 7 for 9 but should have had the Josh Groban at the Emmy Awards even though I didn't watch them--I'd read about the headline in a few papers...Rob got me two others. Jukebox...ROCKET...16000/20000...3rd/9...my two boards win round with a 6000 point sweep. ............LITBOX...15500/20000...5th/9...the other players in the bar have stopped playing. Triviaoke...ROCKET...19748/28000...4th/9...PLBAAB wins round. .............LITBOX...19248/28000...5th/9...I take at least two -250s this round plus two for less than +200. One of those was for the words to 'Sylvia's Mother' which contains both choices "leave her alone", and "on her own" somewhere in the song and I had to wait until the last line to change answers. I wanted to have at least 20000 before the final question.

Now the Encore answers come up. Superstar acts. What would this be? Longest at #1. Most #1s?
Encore Question:...In the fifty years of the Billboard's Hot 100 what artist's single rates as the most popular?:

Rob says this first. I know the answer too as this year I have a subscription to Billboard magazine and brought that issue to the bar last month ago for them to look through. This song made #1 and then two years later came back on the charts and made it to #1 again. The editors thought that was more of an achievement than staying at #1 for 16 weeks. That issue also had the Santana and Rob Thomas song 'Smooth' as the Top Rock song in fifty years and a story about it winning at the Grammys--an Encore question they asked when I wasn't here last month.
Correct Answer:....4. Chubby Checker
[NTN Extra Fact:...Chubby's 'Twist' took the prize while The Beatles and Elvis didn't even make the Top 5.]
I'm right and stay in 4rd with ROCKET at 29622. I finish 56th overall for all North America. The bar is 4th in North America with a 30750 average.. I earn 3000+ points for making this week's standard of 19000 points. COSMO wins and is 22nd overall. (NTN.com kept us in 4th place out of 1456 bars).
The new scoring system of the Network Top 20 now lists more than one individual from each bar with not even a five player limit like they use to calculate top bar average. I noticed more than five names from Fletchers in Michigan in the Top 10 and the Getaway in Pittsburgh with most spots between 11 and 20. This seems to be a good way to hide the situation that there used to be more than 11000 players a Saturday a few years ago. Now there were only 5464 tonight and only 5206 had a positive score. Negative scores were something they never listed until this year.
The quiz writers toughened up the game this week but with a recession and other distractions I believe that NTN is gradually dieing.
Here's how the rest of the bar did: Player preEncore Final Rank ntn.com rank COSMO 22201 33301 22 24 METLCA 21092 31638 37 36 PLBAAB 20214 30321 49 46 ROCKET 19748 29622 56 53 LITBOX 19248 28872 63 62 GORDO 8231 x 4115 2148 2689 PEDRO 8001 x 4001 2282 2742 MADDOG 3000 x 1500 4988 4052 ZAPHOD 2500 x 1250 5260 4261 LEAFS 1670 x 835 5711 4553 (ntn.com listed 5464 players)
Other games:...I start the evening with ROCKET at 4,062,600 Players Plus points and LITBOX at 1,756,500 P+.
9:00pm...Playback (see above).
I was at a soccer game earlier this evening which went into overtime because it was the Quarterfinal playoff game. Serbian White Eagles beat North York Astros of the local CSL league. I drove directly from there and parked on a local street. No alcohol for me while I'm driving so my bill was only $2.09 for two diet colas because of the first refill for free policy which I'd never heard of before. A very cheap night!
