NTN Encore Question of May 19th, 2007.

Answers:

  1. Howlin' Wolf
  2. Chuck Berry
  3. Muddy Waters
  4. Mick Jagger
  5. Robert Johnson

I wasn't playing this week as I was watching a soccer game. The Toronto FC MLS team lost to DC United then I stayed for the Reserves game. Thanks to Steven/SEKA from the Playback message board for the recap.

Reading through the recap I think I would have got only 5 out of 9 OnBeat questions at best as I have dropped off reading about current music events. I have a Billboard magazine unopened from the week before. Triviaoke songs I probably wouldn't have known I wouldn't have had 20000 before the Encore question.

Encore Question:..."Smokestack Lightning" was one of the signature songs of this blues legend:

Correct Answer:....1. Howlin' Wolf

[NTN Extra Fact:...The song reached #8 in the Black Singles Chart in 1956.]

I think I would have got this one but it's hard to say. I have a Chuck Berry's greatest hits double CD with about 40 songs and this one wasn't on it. Mick Jagger may have covered this decades later but he's not a blues legend. Down to three but within the two weeks I received a brochure for Joel Whitburn's new Billboard Singles updated book and for "what's new" he says there's now listings for those early pop pioneers who had hits that never made the pop charts especially early pioneers before the Top 100. The sample page was a listing of Howlin' Wolf who'd never been in this book before and a 1956 listing for "Smokestack Lightning". It made both the Grammy and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I can't be sure I would have remembered reading that within the 30 seconds but that's why I go out to play and not be a Monday morning quarterback.
