Encore Question of May 14th, 2005.
Played at the Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.
Tonight I'm playing with two boards as ROCKET and LITBOX with Rob COSMO, Sean METLCA and Phil PLBAAB.
My game so far had gone like this: TuneUp...ROCKET...4500/5000...1st/8...ROCKET, COSMO, and METLCA win round. ..........LITBOX...4000/5000...4th/8. I split on an answer. OnBeat...ROCKET...6500/14000...3rd/8...PLBAAB and NUDNIK win round with 4 of 9 right. ..........LITBOX...6000/14000...6th/8. 2 right and 7 wrong. That's the worst round of OnBeat I can remember. I wouldn't have expected that until late in the summer. Maybe too many cooks at our table. Once I'd missed a few, I doubted everything I could think of. I maybe should have got four right. No chance of making 20000 before Encore this week. JukeBox...ROCKET...12465/20000...3rd/8...LITBOX wins round. ...........LITBOX...11980/20000...5th/8. A good round for me. We got the categories we wanted. Triviaoke...ROCKET...19911/28000...2nd/8...ROCKET wins round. .........LITBOX...19409/28000...3rd/8. Hey, no -250s this round! Also having friends got me the answer sooner so I didn't have those 200 point switches. I came pretty close to making 20000. On some e-mail penpal site somewhere, I once listed my favourite song as "Brian Wilson" by Barenaked Ladies and wouldn't you know this week it was the question of the round; which is usually one where time after time I've taken a -250. Ooh. I get a 1000 instead.
Now the Encore answers come up. Looks like gibberish phrases except for one which I recognized. I start talking about it. Now this week let me concentrate and press in 50% as the points risk.
Encore Question:...We have made up four of these band names. Which of these really exists?
Wow. I knew this even before the question came up. No worries that the other phrases may have been made up. I'd heard of Brian Jonestown Massacre over the years from the underground entertainment papers; especially over the last year because of the movie/DVD reviews for their feud with the Dandy Warhols. The group's name is like one of those Wheel Of Fortune answers when they combine two phrases. Yep I knew this one right away.
Correct Answer:....3. Brian Jonestown Massacre
[NTN Extra Fact:...The Brian Jonestown Massacre will be playing at this year's Lollapalooza Festival.]
I'm right and stay in 2nd with ROCKET with 29866. I finish 62nd in all North America. The bar finishes at 15th in all North America with a 29089 average. I earn 3000+ points for meeting this week's standard of 16000 points. [ntn.com kept us in 15th out of 1960 bars].
Here's how the rest of the bar did: Player preEncore Final Rank ntn.com rank COSMO 20018 30027 60 131 ROCKET 19911 29866 62 136 LITBOX 19419 29113 72 171 METLCA 19143 28714 75 181 PLBAAB 18484 27726 84 231 NUDNIK 11926 x 8349 3454 3047 WOMAN 8950 10698 1613 2308 MADDOG 2500 x 1250 9020 7741 [ntn.com listed 9012 players]
Other games:...I start the evening with ROCKET at 3,207,000 P+ points and LITBOX at 1,013,000.
I'm here in time for the last question. I try to sign on my second board but see that it has the same frequency as a board Rob was using so I let it go. I don't give it back because Rob has already done that and they gave it back out again. I hide it under our table after Rob fiddles with it but can't change the frequency and get another board half hour later. 8:00pm...RaceDay Countdown...ROCKET...719/1500...2nd/4...1000+ points...I'm 1094th in NA...bar is 1683rd in NA.
METLCA wins. (thanks to him for good guessing I slipstream on his answers. Neither of us know anything about racing.
8:30pm...Tuned In Countdown...ROCKET...10616/15000...3rd/9...1000+ points...I'm 161st in NA.
..............LITBOX...10668/15000...2nd/9...1000+ points...I'm 156th...bar is 32nd in NA...COSMO wins.
Three Simpsons questions which I of course didn't know.
9:00pm...Playback (see above).
I win 500+ points as ROCKET for winning a Dodge ad challenge. 1 in 3 chance.
My timing is still wrong as I notice I'm walking home half hour earlier than I usually do. I haven't stayed behind for RetroTV Countdown.
