Encore Question of May 7th, 2005.
Played at the Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.

Answers:

  1. Paul Simon
  2. James Taylor
  3. George Harrison
  4. Glen Campbell
  5. James Brown

Tonight I'm playing with two boards as ROCKET and LITBOX with Bill MADDOG as the only players in the bar.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp...ROCKET...4500/5000...1st/3...ROCKET wins round.
..........LITBOX...4000/5000...2nd/3 tied with MADDOG.
one guess right for me and I split on one answer.
OnBeat...ROCKET...10500/14000...1st/3...our three boards co-win round.
..........LITBOX...10000/14000...2nd/3.
6 right and 3 wrong. I got fooled by the Rob Thomas album because it said 'coming out in April' and I looked
at that as being a future album instead of ntn just recycling a question. Ack. I was listening to the album and
watching his DVD earlier in the week.
JukeBox...ROCKET...15650/20000...1st/3...my two boards win round.
...........LITBOX...15150/20000...2nd/3.
I couldn't expect to get another perfect 6000 for the third week in a row. We got all the choices we wanted.
Things looked bleak for reaching 20000 by the Encore round.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...20601/28000...1st/3...ROCKET wins round.
.........LITBOX...20082/28000...2nd/3.
I took only one -250 in this round (the last question) and switched a few at the last second before that. Some
really lucky guesses.

Now the Encore answers come up. Looks like with these names it should be something about the 1970s. Bill thinks it should be easy but I am expecting something obscure like for the last few months.

Encore Question:...Who was the first musician to host 'Saturday Night Live'?

Wow. I know this right off! (first time in a few months). It has to be Paul Simon. One of his skits at the beginning of the show was he didn't want to come out for the opening wearing a big turkey suit (was a Thanksgiving show) and was talked into it by producer Lorne Michaels. He came out and opened with "Still Crazy After All These Years". He was usually on the show with Steve Martin whenever someone was invited to 'The Five Timers Club' exclusive to five time hosts. The only other name from this list that I know was an actual host was George Harrison as Lorne Michaels joked around that he was expecting all The Beatles to be on the show for the $3000 hosting fee. Bill was certain of Paul Simon too and I said I was. Janis Ian was a previous Encore answer as the first ever 'musical' guest but this question definitely said 'host'.

Correct Answer:....1. Paul Simon

[NTN Extra Fact:...I missed seeing it.]

I'm right and win as ROCKET with 26781 points*. I finish 120th in all North America. The bar finishes at 1247th in all North America. I earn 3000+ points for meeting this week's standard of 15000 points. (ntn.com moved the bar up to 247th with a 15717 average out of 1890 bars).

*Hey did I even punch in a bet at all? I supposedly only risked 30%. No I guess I forgot. I thought the default was 50% as I see players other weeks who leave before the game is over crash by 50% when noone is around to answer. Maybe I had a flashback to the old style boards? Well even a 50% bet and getting the Rob Thomas answer right wouldn't have got me into the Top 20 this week. Rob COSMO made the Top 20 at Joe Mercury. Next week Rob and Sean should be at this bar.

A whole week of mistimings. I missed a soccer game earlier today as I thought it was tomorrow and didn't bother looking in my day planner. On Tuesday I went back to my old job locale and while I went back up the street to clean out my desk drawer, a guide dog that the office lets loose all day until the lady is ready to leave nosed into my track bag when I was packing and ate my lunch. Getting back in the groove of that kind of work was exhausting. Getting my web page transferred over to a new site when so much was going wrong like connection timeouts and even a one second blackout at my home which disconnected me ended up taking up most of my spare time. My whole week has been out of synch so this didn't even rank as the worst thing that happened this week. I was more pleased that the Encore was so easy.

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
Player	preEncore	Final	Rank	ntn.com rank
ROCKET	20601 26781 120 340
LITBOX	20082 26106 129 396
MADDOG	17132 25698 134 430
(ntn.com listed 8450 players)

Other games:...I start the evening with ROCKET at 3,200,500 P+ points and LITBOX at 1,006,000.
7:30pm...Countdown...ROCKET...1139/15000...5th/6...500+ points...I'm 8701st in NA...bar is 893rd.
..............LITBOX...293/15000...6th/6...500+ points...I'm 9665th in NA...STIQ wins.
I'm here in time for the last two questions.
8:00pm...RaceDay Countdown...ROCKET...703/1500...2nd/3...1000+ points...I'm 1121st in NA...bar is 1714th in NA.
..............LITBOX...695/1500...3rd/3...1000+ points...I'm 1321st in NA...MADDOG wins.
Who dialed this game on? I don't know anything about NASCAR racing. I was just ready for them to give me the answer with 20 points to go. Plus a few lucky guesses. I'm lucky the P+ standard was only 300.
8:30pm...Tuned In Countdown...ROCKET...9556/15000...3rd/5...1000+ points...I'm 1393rd in NA.
..............LITBOX...9536/15000...4th/5...1000+ points...I'm 1411th...bar is 806th in NA...STIQ wins (she sat out the last game).
Two Simpsons questions which I of course didn't know.
9:00pm...Playback (see above).
10:00pm...RetroTV Countdown...ROCKET...12574/15000...1st/2...1000+ points...I'm 246th in NA.
............LITBOX...12574/15000...2nd/2...1000+ points...I'm 246th in NA...bar is 1713th in NA.
