Encore Question of April 16th, 2005.
Played at the Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.

Answers:

  1. Road To Nowhere
  2. Paradise City
  3. Highway To Hell
  4. Wherever I May Roam
  5. The Long And Winding Road

Tonight I'm playing with two boards as ROCKET and LITBOX with Sean METLCA and Rob COSMO and as PLBAAB (signing on as he expected Phil to arrive in time). Unless I know the Encore answer for sure, I'm going to split my boards after the last month or so of narrowing it down to a 50/50 guess.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp...ROCKET...4500/5000...4th/8...LITBOX, COSMO and PLBAAB win round.
..........LITBOX...5000/5000...1st/8.
I split on one answer and need help on one other.
OnBeat...ROCKET...13000/14000...2nd/8...METLCA wins round and has lead with 14000.
..........LITBOX...12500/14000...5th/8.
I go 8 for 9 and was pleased because I had been to two soccer games this week including one this afternoon and the
write-ups cut into my web-surfing for music news. I didn't get the question on 'Natalie' having a number 1 song
but METLCA guessed it right.
JukeBox...ROCKET...18361/20000...5th/8...my two boards win round.
...........LITBOX...18861/20000...2nd/8.
The templates for the categories were from last week although the questions were on completely different subjects.
Voting for 'Songs of 2000' drew a question about some song on a 1979 album.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...22078/28000...5th/8...OLDUDE wins round.
.........LITBOX...22557/28000...3rd/8.
I took two -250s and switched to two answers at the last second to avoid two more wrong thanks to Rob and Sean. They
helped me avoid a complete disaster.

Now the Encore answers come up. Imaginary place names? Time to think of the artists that sing these songs.

Encore Question:..."Hey Mama look at me, I'm on my way to the promised land" said the lead singer on:

I don't know this. I've pitched out '5' as I know this Beatles song well. I was thinking '4' was an old folk song (nope Metallica classic). I mentioned that '1' was by Talking Heads. One of them mentions 'Guns N' Roses' which would be '2' so I put a board on that. My other one I put on '1' but was looking more for a Led Zeppelin song. Hmm I'll switch my '1' answer to '3' for the AC/DC classic. I can't remember more than the chorus on any of these songs beyond '5' (not '4' at all). I didn't hear what the Rob and Sean were saying about Metallica but said something about AC/DC at about the time I was thinking of the most Led Zeppelinesque band. OK. Hmm. Even with splitting I've still only covered 50% of the answers. Another triviaoke round question and I'd done poor enough on them tonight...

Correct Answer:....3.. Highway To Hell

[NTN Extra Fact:...No stop signs and no speed limit can slow down AC/DC on this heavy metal classic.]

I'm right on my lower ranked ROCKET board and win with 33117. I finish 4th in all North America. The bar finishes 347th as everyone in the bar misses the correct answer. I found that hard to believe I won as I thought Rob would split his boards. I earn 3000+ points (on ROCKET only for meeting this week's 17000 standard, LITBOX earns only 1500+). [ntn.com moves our bar up to 74th out of 1698 with an average of 15718].

To finish 4th in this game with that modest score proves the Encore questions have become too difficult. I expected I wouldn't make the top 20 because there'd be enough metalheads out there that could sing along with every word. There's plenty of other bars have their players split the Encore answer as I've read on the Playback message board.

My other theory makes sense though although I didn't use it again this week. AC/DC were in the news with the release of their DVD video collection "Family Jewels". That song would definitately be on here. Just like Faith Evans with a new album last week meaning the quizmasters would go back through her catelogue for a question. There I was again last week in the electronics store looking through the 'What's New' bin (really scouting for the OnBeat round). If I could think of that in the thirty seconds of the Encore round, I could have made a suggestion.

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
Player	preEncore	Final	Rank	ntn.com rank
METLCA	23047	x	11524 259	1526
COSMO	22981	x	11491 260	1533
LITBOX	22557	x	11279 265	1574
PLBAAB	22359	x	11180 267	1590
ROCKET	22078	x	33117 4 19
BERGIE	14629	x 7348	2248	2581
OLDUDE	14629	x 7315	2283	2593
MADDOG	10471	x 5236	4476	3699
[ntn.com listed 7861 players]

I had another group of friends playing up at the bar which is where I usually sit rather than the restaurant part. I hadn't seen these Rob or Sean for months and it turns out the weeks I missed coming here because of being sick or doing something else, were the nights they came out.

Richard BERGIE, Bill MADDOG, and Brian OLDUDE were at the bar. I came over a few times to rave on to Brian the soccer coach about how good the Canadian U-17s were this afternoon against Scotland in their game. That's where I was earlier today.
