Encore Question of July 17th, 2004.
Played at the Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.
Answers:
Tonight I'm playing with Richard BERGIE and Brian OLDUDE. Just had to be careful when they leave for smoke breaks. We had a big crowd here tonight with eleven boards in operation.
My game so far had gone like this: TuneUp...ROCKET...5000/5000...1st/11...my two boards co-win round with BERGIE and OLDUDE. ..........LITBOX...5000/5000...1st/11. OnBeat...ROCKET...13000/14000...1st/11...my two boards win round. .............LITBOX...13000/14000...1st/11...eight right and one wrong is very good. JukeBox...ROCKET...18145/20000...2nd/11...BERGIE wins round. ...........LITBOX...18160/20000...1st/11. Triviaoke...ROCKET...23414/28000...2nd/11...LITBOX wins round. .........LITBOX...23437/28000...1st/11. I took two -250s late in the round.
Now the Encore answers come up. Hmm, women that I don't know a lot about. Richard asks who Janis Ian is. "'At 17' lesbian singer" I said. Brian not's back so I bet 50% on his board.
Encore Question:...This singer/songwriter from New York was the first musical guest on Saturday Night Live.

I don't know this but I should because I own a book on Saturday Night Live. I was actually thinking while cutting the lawn last week about George Carlin who I know was the first guest host and then not again until over twenty years later. I was thinking about that show. Any curiosity and I would have looked at my book and maybe found that factoid. If I'd read the question carefully I would have ruled out Linda Ronstadt because she's not from New York. Richard was suggesting that answer and I had only ruled Dusty Springfield (too old, not the right image) and Suzanne Vega (too young). OK Number '2'. It could be any of the three. I know both '2' and '3' had been on the show. I though Linda Ronstadt was 'too famous' to be on the show as nobody watched the show when it first came on the air. Oh well. I didn't change although I had plenty of time.
Correct Answer:....1. Janis Ian
[NTN Extra Fact:...She performed her signature hit "At Seventeen" on the 1975 telecast.]
I'm wrong and fall to second as LITBOX with 11719. I finish 5492nd in North America. I earn only 1500+ Players Plus points for not meeting this week's 20000 standard. The bar finishes 1353rd in North America. NVUS was the only player who answered the Encore correct and won with 19023. [ntn.com moved our bar up to 181st of 1784 bars with a 12941 average].
Besides the reference to George Carlin last week, I had seen a concert on Canada Day of the 1970s band "Lighthouse". On Thursday, Mary brought some old LPs of the group into the Novotel where we meet up for snacks after swimming. The band line up included Howard Shore on flute and other woodwind instruments. I remember he went on to be the musical director of Saturday Night Live and this year won an Academy Award for his musical work on "The Lord Of The Rings". If I'd have been curious I would have looked that up in my book and may have come across the Janis Ian fact. Right now I'm reading a book on the wrestler Jerry Lawler and he had some staged battles with Andy Kaufman who was on the first episode of SNL! Three reasons why I should have flipped through my book!

Now I expect that I'll be away for about three weeks with a visit to a friend's cottage, recovering after watching the Caribana parade, and another soccer game taking up my time. I'll probably let my music knowledge fall back away.
