Encore Question of May 22nd, 2004.
Played at the Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.

Answers:

  1. Duran Duran
  2. The Moody Blues
  3. Skyliners
  4. Electric Light Orchestra
  5. Styx

Tonight I'm playing with three boards, ROCKET, LITBOX and DSTORM (named for the new CPSL franchise Durham Storm). The game caught me with DSTORM in the lead after I changed an answer in the OnBeat round to a wrong answer on my other two boards. Instead of maximizing that board, I continued to answer it third as I thought I'd catch up. I didn't want DSTORM to get on the bar's Hall of Fame--too hard to explain for the next year.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp...ROCKET...4000/5000...1st/5...my three boards win round.
..........LITBOX...4000/5000...1st/5.
..........DSTORM...4000/5000...1st/5...only one for three in guessing the answers I needed.
OnBeat...ROCKET...11000/14000...2nd/5.
.............LITBOX...11000/14000...2nd/5.
.............DSTORM...12000/14000...1st/5...DSTORM wins round at 8 right and 1 wrong and I was pleased
but upset that I switched to a wrong answer when I confused the singles title and forgot the album title
of Gretchan Wilson.
JukeBox...ROCKET...16941/20000...2nd/5...ROCKET wins round.
...........LITBOX...16934/20000...3rd/5...I got all the categories I wanted.
...........DSTORM...17724/20000...1st/5...good round so I couldn't catch myself with answering some things so fast
that I'd get 1000 for each one.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...22441/28000...2nd/5...ROCKET wins round.
.........LITBOX...22427/28000...3rd/5.
.............DSTORM...22870/28000...1st/5...I take two -250s which is an easy way of realizing that I
wouldn't have a Hall Of Fame game this week.

Now the Encore answers come up. Quite a variety of bands up here. With such a mix, I should be able to get this.

Encore Question:...Denny Laine and Clint Warwick were two of the original members of this 60's band:

.

I don't even wait for the answers come back up. I know who it is because I recognize Denny Laine from years with Paul McCartney & Wings. On their Wings Over America album Denny sang the Moody Blues hit 'Go Now'. Are The Moody Blues one of the answers given? Oh there they are. I pass the answer on to LSVSGR who was just beside me at the bar and walked over to SQUID who looked like he'd stopped playing one round again and was now helping his lady friend with a coin-op card game. I'm going to touch his Playmaker so just told him the answer. This answer was the exact same structure as last week's band member question.

Correct Answer:....2. The Moody Blues

[NTN Extra Fact:...The British group's other members were Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge.]

I would have had more trouble if they'd not given Denny Laine's name and switched for one of these guys but would have tossed out everybody else by their 'decades'. Duran Duran 1980s. Skyliners 1950s. Electric Light Orchestra and Styx from 1970s and 1980s. Of course Moody Blues had 60s, 70s and 80s hits but I knew when they started.

I'm right and win with DSTORM at 34305. I finish 32nd overall for all North America. I earn 3000+ Players Plus points for meeting this week's 16000 standard. The bar finishes 585th in North America with a 24545 average. Answering DSTORM first instead of last might have gotten me a Top 20 finish. [ntn.com moves our bar up to 70th of 1836 bars].

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
Player	preEncore	Final	Rank	ntn.com rank
DSTORM	22870 34305 32 89
ROCKET	22441 33661 46 115
LITBOX	22427 33641 47 116
LSVSGR	12235 18353	4391	1790
SQUID 5527	x 2763	9155	7013
[ntn.com lists 9157 players].

I find out John LSVSGR used to play baseball and the nickname for the famous bat maker Louisville Slugger. I've never seen him here before. We team up for the next game but I give my DSTORM board back to the bar.

There's actually one more weekend in May before the smoking ban applies to bars but I won't be here because there is a soccer game next Saturday. There was an exhibition game tonight for the Toronto Lynx against a CPSL team but expecting the weather was rain any minute (yes by the second half it would have poured), no shelter to write notes, and the teams would probably wear sweatshirts instead of numbers so I wouldn't be able to tell the players apart, I decided not to go this week.

Other games:...I start the evening with ROCKET at 3,010,500 P+ points and LITBOX at 820,500. 7:30pm...Countdown...ROCKET...692/15000...7th/8...500+ points...FREEKS wins.
...........LITBOX...682/15000...8th/8...500+ points...I'm here in time for the last three questions.
8:00pm...Countdown...ROCKET...9267/15000...1st/7...1000+ points...I'm 2884th in NA.
..............LITBOX...9248/15000...2nd/7...1000+ points...I'm 2899th in NA...bar is 825th in NA.
8:30pm...RetroTVCountdown...ROCKET...8608/15000...1st/5...1000+ points...I'm 1348th in NA...the bar is 15th in Canada with a 7626 average.
..............LITBOX...8597/15000...2nd/5...1000+ points...I'm 1359th in NA.
No Simpsons questions this week but lots of 1990s-2000s to knock down my score.
