Encore Question of May 15th, 2004.
Played at the Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.

Answers:

  1. System Of A Down
  2. Blink 182
  3. Barenaked Ladies
  4. Fuel
  5. Puddle Of Mudd

Tonight I'm playing with two boards, ROCKET and LITBOX at The Frog & Firkin with Frank SPQQKY. I've taken over Doug CRANKY's board when he left after the OnBeat round. Still, that only gives us four boards so I don't expect a good bar score. I've come to my neighbourhood bar because the satellite is working again; the new Playmakers are still in the future. I'd detoured by here on Wednesday after work and the satellite was still down so I expected I'd pop in tonight and just see who was here and take the subway to last week's location.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp...ROCKET...4500/5000...1st/6...my two boards win round.
..........LITBOX...4500/5000...1st/6...I was one for two on the guesses I needed to make.
OnBeat...ROCKET...12500/14000...1st/8...my two boards win round ...8 right and 1 wrong was
pleasing. I ignored Frank's suggestion and got it right.
.............LITBOX...12500/14000...1st/8...CRANKY got three right and left so I took over his board.
JukeBox...ROCKET...18191/20000...2nd/8...LITBOX wins round.
...........LITBOX...18203/20000...1st/8...I got all the categories I wanted.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...23590/28000...2nd/8...LITBOX wins round.
.........LITBOX...23603/28000...1st/8.
I was going along well but took the last two questions for -250s. Disappointing as I owned the Bananarama song
"I Heard A Rumour" and had my answer in right away.

Now the Encore answers come up. Bands right from today's charts. Could be anything.

Encore Question:...Doug Ardito and Craig Upchurch make up half of this rock band:

.

.

.

I don't know this but put out Barenaked Ladies before the answers come up as I know quite well my hometown band. As soon as the answers come back I know it's not Blink 182 as I know the names of those guys [even if they were just faces I've just discarded the quintet and trio]. Now this could be hard. Still three choices. I sidestep and think of the NTN logic. They haven't had '1' as an answer for quite awhile. Same with '4'. I switch from '4' to '5'. Now I concentrate on '5'. I've seen these guys on two talk shows over the last two months. Long blond haired singer but wearing a touque. Reminds me of the sound of Nirvana. I think I may have seen a writing credit. What band has a member named Doug? I've kept Dougie's board in the game from the time he left. I've already told Frank what I'm switching to but not my reasoning once I've pitched out '3' and '4'. Ooh get ready to flinch.

Correct Answer:....5. Puddle Of Mudd

[NTN Extra Fact:...Paul Phillips and frontman Wes Scantlin complete the quartet.]

Yeah Wes Scantlin the singer is a name I've heard however that wouldn't have narrowed my selections any further!

I'm right and win with LITBOX at 35405. I finish 3rd on the Network Top 20 for all North America. I earn 3000+ Players Plus points for meeting this week's standard of points which I missed reading. The bar finishes 9th in North America with a 26047 average. [ntn.com knocks us down to 11th of 1968 bars].

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
Player	preEncore	Final	Rank	ntn.com rank
LITBOX	23603 35403 3 4
ROCKET	23590 35385 4 5
SPQQKY	19177 28765 401 95
CRANKY	17350 26025	1315 158
MUNGO 9312	x 4656	8446	5278
TUBBY 6226	x 3113	8961	6660
WISERS 1047	x 539	9820	9102
LYNN -384	x -768 10000	-----
[ntn.com lists 9797 players].

I think this ties with my highest position ever. I was surprised because I expected most young people would have got this one but the bar scores were surprisingly low. If I'd bought one of their albums, I would have memorized the lineup at least in the back of my mind and this answer a lot easier.

I outguessed the NTN question writers at least for tonight. This is probably my high water mark until the late Fall as the local soccer season starts this weekend and I won't have enough time to keep up with the music news and rattle off 8 of 9 correct OnBeat answers. Tonight's finish is a good way to bow out from these high scores.

The bar has only one more weekend before the Ontario government bans smoking in places like this. I don't smoke and may cheer that my shirts no longer have to go straight into the laundry bag once I get home but the new law will keep even more patrons away from this place.

Other games:...I start the evening with ROCKET at 3,004,000 P+ points and LITBOX at 814,000. Looks like last week's visit to another bar was lost in hyperspace.
7:30pm...Countdown...ROCKET...2500/15000...5th/6...500+ points...I'm 8077th in NA.
...........LITBOX...1164/15000...6th/6...500+ points...I'm here in time for the last three questions as I wait until I'm assured by Dougie and Richard BERGIE that the satellite is working before I ask for a board.
8:00pm...Countdown...ROCKET...11922/15000...2nd/7...1000+ points...I'm 14th overall in Canada.
..............LITBOX...11967/15000...1st/7...1000+ points...I'm 12th in Canada...bar is 5th in Canada with an 11094 average...lots of teamwork in this game as I would have had maybe 2000 less than this.
8:30pm...RetroTVCountdown...ROCKET...9709/15000...1st/6...1000+ points...I'm 1270th in NA...the bar is 19th in Canada with a 7928 average.
..............LITBOX...9696/15000...2nd/6...1000+ points...I'm 1282nd in NA.
Two Simpsons questions and a few 1990s-2000s questions knock down my score.
9:00pm...Playback (see above).
10:00pm...Countdown...ROCKET...9961/15000...2nd/6...1000+ points...I'm 2593rd in NA...bar is 1324th.
