Encore Question of May 8th, 2004.
Played at the Bull & Firkin in Toronto Ontario.
Answers:
Tonight I'm playing with two boards, ROCKET and LITBOX alone at The Bull & Firkin in uptown Toronto after finding out that the NTN satellite system was still broken at The Frog & Firkin in my suburb. I had been warned by some posters on the Playback message board that I should inform the bar's management or NTN about that problem but because I expected one of the other players from some of the weeknight games would have made the request not someone like me who only comes here once a week. No wonder the high scores for this early in the month all all over 14000. The bar has now installed a video machine of Golden Tee Golf which knocks out any chance of having a second row players at one end of the bar. I knew from the first question at 7:30pm that nothing had been done but the bartender had already poured me a beer so I stayed for twenty minutes then took the subway to the other bar. Only 25 minutes between the two places.
My game so far had gone like this: TuneUp...ROCKET...4000/5000...2nd/7...my two boards all alone in 2nd. ..........LITBOX...4000/5000...2nd/7...TRICK wins round. I switched to a wrong answer with one second to go which hurt but that experience kept me from doing that again which helped in some of the later rounds. OnBeat...ROCKET...11000/14000...1st/8...my two boards win round ...7 right and 2 wrong was just fine although I realized I had read about the other two answers but couldn't think of them. .............LITBOX...11500/14000...1st/8...noone else got more than four right. JukeBox...ROCKET...16171/20000...2nd/8...LITBOX wins round. ...........LITBOX...16177/20000...1st/5. Triviaoke...ROCKET...23708/28000...1st/8...ROCKET wins round. .........LITBOX...23708/28000...1st/8. I'm very pleased with this. I think the round is over by the sixth question but any more just increases my score. I don't take any -250s this round. NTN threw three 'new' songs (current hits) into this week's questions and I got them. I unintentially tie myself on the last question scoring 1000 with ROCKET and 990 for LITBOX. I've never seen this before and wonder how I'll be credited on the system. Well more encouragement for me to be right for the Encore.
Now the Encore answers come up. Yipes. They are ALL songs by The Cure. I don't know that much about this group. Currently there's a group covering their hit 'Love Song'. Couldn't think of the group but I'll know if I see it but I don't believe NTN would ask something that easy. [The group is named '311'] I've come a long way tonight, let's hope it pays off...
Encore Question:...On which Cure song does Robert Smith sing "So wonderfully wonderfully pretty"?

I must still be in Triviaoke mode because I start rushing through that song, then the instrumental break and I think of their video with one or two of the group hidden behind a piano holding up two plastic cats as if those toys were playing the piano. Sure there's the lipstick-wearing Robert Smith with the frayed hair singing 'Love Cats'. Wow and over 25 seconds to spare. I signal to a couple playing one board but don't get their attention. I'm having enough trouble with my coat tangled in the bar stool to get up so I don't go any further. I am sure aren't I? Yeah! '2' seems to be the new default Encore answer anyway.
Correct Answer:....2. Love Cats
[NTN Extra Fact:...Actually the lyric repeats the word "Wonderfully" four times in a row.]
It was never an American Top 100 Pop hit. I guess you'd have to have heard the song on alternate rock radio in the early 80's or seen their video. Yes to both counts for me.
I'm right and win with both ROCKET and LITBOX at 35562. I finish 12th on the Network Top 20 for all North America. I earn 3000+ Players Plus points for meeting this week's standard of 17000 points. The bar finishes 591st in North America with an 18276 average. [NTN.com moves us up to 50th of 2018 bars]. I place 1st and 2nd on this bar's Hall Of Fame standings with ROCKET. (Seems like the three Southern Ontario bars I've played this game, the Hall of Fame 'twins' the top score so there's really only five different places on their Top 10).
Wow. It was worth the $5.00 subway fare to get away from my usual bar.
Here's how the rest of the bar did: Player preEncore Final Rank ntn.com rank ROCKET 23708 35562 12 26 LITBOX 23708 35562 12 27 METAL 16502 x 8251 7583 2804 TRICK 12093 x 6047 8228 4474 LOWIQ 10547 x 5273 8455 5111 HICCER 9832 x 4916 8560 5440 CACTUS 7972 x 3986 8832 6194 J 7475 x 5956 8255 4527 [NTN.com listed 9771 players]
