Encore Question of April 24th, 2004.
Played at the Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.

Answers:

  1. Sam Cooke
  2. Stevie Wonder
  3. James Brown
  4. Smokey Robinson
  5. Otis Redding

Tonight I'm playing with two boards, ROCKET and LITBOX all alone. There is no playoff hockey on television tonight and the place is almost empty. The Blue Jays baseball game on television didn't bring the patrons here.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp...ROCKET...3500/5000...2nd/4...R wins round...my two boards tie with JANGAR for 2nd.
..........LITBOX...3500/5000...2nd/4.
I start by getting the first two questions wrong. I only guess 1 of 4 in these 50/50 chances. My knowledge of
radio call letters on the American east (W) vs west (K) coast get me another one right thanks to growing up near
stations from Buffalo NY.
OnBeat...ROCKET...8500/14000...1st/5...my two boards win round...5 right and 4 wrong.
.............LITBOX...8500/14000...1st/5...only 1000 ahead of JANGAR. One of my right's was a 20% chance of
a country artist's new album. I'm going to get much worse once the soccer season starts and I don't have time
to read about music.
JukeBox...ROCKET...13689/20000...1st/5...ROCKET wins round.
...........LITBOX...13673/20000...2nd/5...I got the categories I wanted. 'Rolling Stone Covers' meant the magazine not
the band.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...19128/28000...1st/3...ROCKET wins round.
.........LITBOX...19111/28000...2nd/3.
I can't quite pass 20000 but only take one -250 for a good recovery after the first two rounds of this game.

Now the Encore answers come up. Hmm, early RnB/soul singers. A non-player has just come in named Kevin (not the same guy as I met last month) and he's standing by to help. He's says he's never seen anyone play two boards before!

Encore Question:..."These Arms Of Mine" was the first RnB hit song by which artist?

I don't know this but have eliminated two choices by the time the answers come back. Last week the game got me on Stevie Wonder's first hit instead of "Fingertips Part 2" they had something with the title '...older women'. James Brown's first hit was "Try Me". Now it's down to three. I don't think it's Smokey Robinson unless he had some hit's before he joined/formed The Miracles [No]. So down to two. I'm in for '1' but could think of two reasons for changing. I thought that Sam Cooke sang "This Old Heart Of Mine" [Wrong; it was the Isley Brothers but I mixed that up because of Rod Stewart covering "Twistin' The Night Away"] was too similar in title to tonight's title. The other reason was an NTN quirk that they wouldn't have '5' as the correct answer four times in a row. I was thinking "yes they would, yes they would" but just stayed frozen.

Correct Answer:....5. Otis Redding

[NTN Extra Fact:...His only #1 pop single was 1968's "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay".]

I don't mention it much but that puts an end to my correct answer streak of 12 in a row. That's probably the longest I've ever had although I've had a lot of luck keeping that going.

I'm wrong but win with ROCKET at 9564. Rankings for the bar and individuals haven't been displayed all night. I earn only 1500+ Players Plus points for not meeting this week's standard of 19000 points. [ntn.com listed us 879th of 1991 bars with a 4849 average].

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
Player	preEncore	Final	Rank	ntn.com rank
ROCKET	19128	x 9564	xxxx	1967
LITBOX	19111	x 9555	xxxx	1970
R	10254	x 5127	xxxx	5057
[ntn.com lists 10097 players]

Other games:...I start the evening with ROCKET at 2,992,500 P+ points and LITBOX at 802,500.
7:30pm...Countdown...ROCKET...4219/15000...1st/5...500+ points.
...........LITBOX...4217/15000...2nd/5...500+ points...I'm here in time for the last five questions.
8:00pm...Countdown...ROCKET...11001/15000...2nd/5...1000+ points.
..........LITBOX...10976/15000...3rd/5...1000+ points...JANGAR wins.
8:30pm...RetroTVCountdown...ROCKET...12449/15000...3rd/5...1000+ points.
..............LITBOX...12466/15000...2nd/5...1000+ points...JANGAR wins.
One Simpsons question in the game was them vs other cartoon characters so I guessed it right.
9:00pm...Playback (see above).
10:00pm...Countdown...ROCKET...10921/15000...2nd/3...1000+ points.
...............LITBOX...10928/15000...1st/3...1000+ points.

It looks like I'll pass 3 million Players Plus points for ROCKET while I'm not even here as each week that I come back I've gained about 8000 points.
