Encore Question of February 28th, 2004.
Played at the Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.

Answers:

  1. Garth Brooks
  2. Alan Jackson
  3. Vince Gill
  4. Toby Keith
  5. Joshua Grayson

Tonight I'm playing with three boards, ROCKET and LITBOX and TCROAT (in honour of the CPSL team Toronto Croatia). I wasn't going to bother with a third board but Richard BERGIE/GHQ took a taxi all the way from downtown and got here less than five minutes before the Playback game started. Jennifer US was playing one other board a bit further down the bar with Glen and some other guy making suggestions.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp...ROCKET...4500/5000...4th/7...BERGIE/GHQ and FREEKS win round.
.............LITBOX...4500/5000...4th/7.
............TCROAT...4500/5000...4th/7...Richard offered me the Sex Pistols answer about the colour of the album
cover but I changed back to my first impulse and was wrong. Otherwise I guessed right on the 50/50 guess I needed.
OnBeat...ROCKET...12500/14000...1st/7...ROCKET wins round at 8 right, 1 wrong.
...........LITBOX...11500/14000...1st/7.
..........TCROAT...11500/14000...1st/7.
I could have had all nine as I'd read all this news in the last few weeks but actually wasn't looking the right way
when I landed one box on Janet Jackson even though I thought I'd pressed the number beside it.
JukeBox...ROCKET...18453/20000...1st/6...ROCKET wins round.
...........LITBOX...17435/20000...2nd/6.
..........TCROAT...17201/20000...3rd/6.
We controlled the categories on this and I guessed a few on first instinct when the questions popped up.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...25689/28000...1st/6...ROCKET wins round.
.........LITBOX...24659/28000...2nd/6.
.........TCROAT...23871/28000...3rd/6.
The best I'd ever done in this round. No -250s and I was able to change the Carly Simon lyric from "vain" as
in "You're So Vain" to "pain" as another title "Haven't Got Time For The Pain" for about 400 points.

Now the Encore answers come up. Oh no Country Artists. Richard has said earlier for the JukeBox round that there's nothing worse than having Country music as a category then he added and said the alternative category as more Country. Now we'll be haunted by it this week for the Encore question. I don't even know the fifth guy. I even coralled Don (a friend of Richard's who will sometimes play as MOLLY) who was reading the paper and eating his dinner to ask if he knew anything about Country music but he admitted he didn't. This could be trouble. Richard advises Jennifer to only risk 10% because she could win if we were wrong. I say we'll offer her the answer if we know it.

Encore Question:...His big break came when his wife Denise cornered Glen Campbell at an airport:

.

Hmm I remembered from a few years ago an A&E Biography about Alan Jackson for a few reasons. One was that his wife was already named Jackson before they got married and they made sure to say she was not a relation. Two was that she really helped keep his hopes up after years of his struggling with his day job with his night time pursuit of music. Also the break of finally having the song "Here In The Real World" being his last chance or he was giving up. I thought her name was Cindy though and had forgotten the airport incident. Still I offered up that I was going for Alan Jackson before Glen offered Vince Gill. I then added in the A&E Biography snippet but I didn't know what Richard had answered. NTN seems to only have the Encore answer as '2' about three times a year. I'd thought we'd badly split.

Correct Answer:....2. Alan Jackson

[NTN Extra Fact:...Denise, a flight attendant at the time gave Glen Campbell.......*.] (sorry couldn't read this fast enough but it was something like "her husband's demo tape".)

A Google search revealed that '5' choice Joshua Grayson was an American Idol contestant who sang Country songs.

I'm right and win with ROCKET at 38533. I finish 4th on the Network Top 20 for all North America. I earn 3000+ Players Plus points for meeting this week's standard of 20000. The bar finishes 6th in North America with a 35005 average as I must have convinced Richard to side with my answer. That puts me with this area's double counting at positions 1 and 2 on this bar's Hall Of Fame for the best performance in the last 12 months. (NTN.com listed 2967 bars).

Should have listened to Richard earlier in the TuneUp round because putting up really high scores in the stratosphere doesn't happen often.

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
Player	preEncore	Final	Rank	ntn.com rank
ROCKET	25689 38533 4 21 I finish 4th on the Network Top 20 in all North America.
LITBOX	24659 36989 8 39
TCROAT	23871 35807 14 53
BERGIE	22248 33372 299 85
GHQ	20218 30327	1184 136
US	10515	x 9463	7249	2967
[NTN.com listed 11679 players]

Later Phil PLBAAB/CYCLER came in and we talked about the split-off group that stopped coming here a few years ago but they've split up themselves. I hadn't seen Phil in a few years. I invited him to join us here any Saturday night.
