Encore Question of January 24th, 2004.
Played at the Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.
Answers:
Tonight I'm playing alone with three boxes, ROCKET, LITBOX, and non P+ board BSTARS in honour of the new expansion CPSL soccer team Windsor Border Stars who will start play this season playing some games in Windsor and some across the river in Detroit. I'm using this board because Nick IAMINU had left earlier and I didn't turn his board in. And here I was worried that I won't have anyone to play with when Toronto bans smoking in bars starting this June. It can't get any lonelier already!
My game so far had gone like this: TuneUp...ROCKET...4000/5000...1st/8...my three boards co-win round with KIRK. .............LITBOX...4000/5000...1st/8...I start off strong but miss the last two questions. ............BSTARS...4000/5000...1st/8. OnBeat...ROCKET...1100/14000...1st/9...my three boards win round...7 right, 2 wrong. ...........LITBOX...12500/14000...1st/9. ...........BSTARS...12500/14000...1st/9. JukeBox...ROCKET...16204/20000...1st/9...ROCKET wins round. ...........LITBOX...15489/20000...3rd/9. ...........BSTARS...15952/20000...2nd/9. my LITBOX doesn't take my answer right away. I got the signal last game that the board was 'OUT OF RANGE' but didn't bother changing it. There was only one instance in this game but the 10:00pm game it happened about three times. It certainly made it less fun and distracted me from the hockey game. Triviaoke...ROCKET...21815/28000...1st/8...ROCKET wins round. .........LITBOX...20993/28000...2nd/8. .........BSTARS...20875/28000...3rd/8. I get through with no -250s this round but have two with less than 200 points including a Beatles song where the phrases: Hey Girl, Say Girl, and Stay Girl all appear somewhere in the song "Eight Days A Week" and we had to race ahead and think what part of the song they'll start quoting from.
Now the Encore answers come up. Big variety of names. This could be anything.
Encore Question:...This rock band with Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore was the leader of "The Daydream Nation".

I don't know this. Well let's see, I'd recognize the names of the guys in The Yardbirds (everybody) and Roxy Music (not the background players). I park all my boards on '3'. I'm having a problem with Flaming Lips because I thought the leader's name was somewhat unusual. Now I've seen them play at the SARSstock concert back in the summer. It would be really embarrassing to miss this if they were the answer. One 'normal' guy and the rest were dressed in bunny suits. OK I won't switch to them even though they had some unusual album titles.
Correct Answer:....4. Sonic Youth
[NTN Extra Fact:...Despite critical acclaim the 1988 album failed to chart.]
Great (sarcastically), not only do I have to memorize the 22,000 albums that have ever made the Billboard charts, I now have to memorize the ones that didn't! Actually seeing the usual suspects in other bars that got it right, I should have known because this group is one of the musical darlings of the NTN quizwriters with every move by the band chronicalled in the OnBeat rounds over the last few years. Also if the woman's name in their group would have appeared, I would have picked them. I know nothing about Pavement. I missed the Encore for the first time this new year and the first time in my last five visits. If only I could have thought of Wayne Coyne as singer from the Flaming Lips, I could have moved on with sorting out the two remaining choices.
I'm wrong but still win with ROCKET at 10907 because everyone else in the bar was wrong. I finish 6492 in North America. I earn only 1500+ Players Plus points for not meeting this week's 15000 standard. The bar finishes 1758th in North America with an 8896 average. [NTN.com moved us up to 597th of 2169 bars]. If I'd have got the Encore right, I would have finished in the Network Top 20.
Here's how the rest of the bar did: Player preEncore Final Rank ntn.com rank ROCKET 21815 x 10907 6492 2739 LITBOX 20993 x 10497 6623 2905 BSTARS 20875 x 10437 6643 2933 SQUID 13937 x 6969 7758 4600 KIRK 11340 x 5670 8176 5720 HIPPO 11132 x 5566 8209 5807 LG 4396 x 3956 8727 7367 GLL 1000 x 500 9839 11283 [NTN listed a total of 11935 players]
