Encore Question of November 9th, 2002.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.
Tonight I'm in fact playing alone although some friends are here but I'm surrounded by karaoke equipment and the sound is almost deafening to communicate with Richard BERGIE and Doug CRANKY. I'm having a good game but was ashamed I couldn't get the Canadian OnBeat question that Neko Case plays Country and one of the two JukeBox question that "Lay It Down" was by Cowboy Junkies. I own it but couldn't think of it. I even thought that Neko Case was compared to the Cowboy Junkies sound but that's just from album reviews.
My game so far had gone like this: TuneUp...ROCKET...5000/5000...1st/6...I win round with my two boards. ..........LITBOX...5000/5000...1st/6. OnBeat...ROCKET...12000/14000...1st/6...JAKE wins round. ..........LITBOX...12000/14000...1st/6...Seven right, two wrong although I was lucky on a few. Jukebox...ROCKET...16041/20000...1st/6...JAKE wins round. .........LITBOX...16041/20000...1st/6. Triviaoke...ROCKET...23483/28000...2nd/6...LITBOX wins round. .........LITBOX...23544/28000...1st/6.
The answers come up and I say to Richard and Doug. "It's about REM". I figured it would be about a song from one of these albums. I don't know the group well enough to match their tracks.
Encore Question:...Which REM release features "The One I Love"?
I don't know this and now that I don't bring my book there's not much chance of getting this. I'm in for "Out Of Time" and offer that when Richard asks me. Hmm wait it's an earlier song than that. Thinking that all the albums are in chronological order (they weren't) I move it up to "Green" subliminally thinking that was the JukeBox questions we had avoided. Kimmo KAV has just arrived but can't help.
Correct Answer:...1 Document
[NTN Extra Fact:...It includes "It's The End Of The World As We Know It".]
I'm wrong but hold the lead as the whole bar is wrong. I finish 6539th and 6548th in North America while the bar finishes 1510th. Self doubt knowing that the bar couldn't finish in the Top 20, I felt I should split my two boards although our five boards would have made it. I earn only 1500 Players Plus points for not meeting this week's standard of 18000.
The album's actually called "REM No. 5: Document" which was the band's sixth album. I don't own any of their albums until their ninth, on cassette tape, "Out Of Time" (good thing I changed my answer). I can't match any REM songs with albums unless I look at them.
Here's how the rest of the bar did: Player preEncore Final Rank LITBOX 23544 x 11772 6539 ROCKET 23483 x 11741 6548 BERGIE 21255 x 10627 6875 CRANKY 20967 x 10483 6918 JAKE 19953 x 9977 7066 CRY 9658 x 4829 8580
Only 10:00pm and the game is over. I plan on staying until 11:00pm any other week but I've got to get out of this earsplitting noise. Richard says he's never coming back here! I remember he said that one of the last times I saw him which was when they had this Karaoke before around St Patrick's Day. He had walked a few doors away to see if Stoney's bar still had NTN. Nope! He asked if I'd like to go down to the Bull & Firkin. Well if we had we'd have missed this game after all with the new early start. The Top 20 list had ELVIS on it at Hurricanes who was a Bull regular and had written a concert review of REM's free concert in Toronto on the Playback message board. Let me get out of this noise. I can see most of the Canada vs USA Women's Gold Cup soccer game if I get home soon!
Other games:...I start the evening with 2,349,500 for ROCKET and 274,000 for LITBOX.
7:30pm...Countdown...364/15000...5th/5...500+ points...I'm 9729th in NA...bar is 1056th...BERGIE wins. I got here in time for the last question.
