Encore Question of May 4th, 2002.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.

Answers:

  1. The Delfonics
  2. Procol Harum
  3. The Young Rascals
  4. Lovin' Spoonful
  5. Gerry And The Pacemakers

Tonight I'm playing at a table with Rob COSMO, Sean METLCA, and LeeAnn CAPER. When I got to the bar just before 8pm, Bill OH YA was the only one I could recognize. Bill was in the second row as all the places along the bar were taken up by non-players watching the hockey or eating and I didn't feel like sitting so far away. The Rob/Sean/LeAnn table was in the non-smoking section which is fine with me but it's television monitor deprived with just one screen and a quite a distance away one showing the hockey game.

The first part of the game didn't get off to a good start for me as right at the end of the previous game one of my boards gave me the 'out of range' message. I replaced that board but the new one also gave me the same message. I went back for another switch but didn't get enough time to log on and answer with this second board.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp....ROCKET...4500/5000...1st/11...in four way tie with COSMO, METLCA and CAPER.
..........LITBOX...4000/5000...working at last.
They knew Max Steiner composed film scores. I've heard that name in the Adult Video
world. "I only know him and one other guy" I say defensively although I blank out on his
name. Within 15 minutes a scraggly looking guy comes into the bar "Ed Powers that's the
other guy!" as I watch this lookalike.
OnBeat...ROCKET...12250/14000...2nd/11...COSMO wins round going 9 for 9.
.........LITBOX...11750/14000...3rd/11...8 right, 1 wrong and I'm pleased.
JukeBox...ROCKET...17380/20000...2nd/11...LITBOX wins round.
..........LITBOX...16885/20000...3rd/11.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...23670/28000...3rd/11...METLCA wins round.
............LITBOX...23184/28000...5th/11.

Great scores with great teamwork so far. The answers come up and I bookmark The Delfonics and Gerry And The Pacemakers and can't remember the other choices.

Encore Question:...Who played a series of gigs alongside The Beatles at The Cavern Club from '61 to '62?

.

.

I was having Liverpool on the brain by volunteering in the Triviaoke round 'Do You Know The Way To San Jose' "Hey Frankie Goes To Hollywood covered that." and then a few questions later for 'Born To Run' "And Frankie Goes To Hollywood covered that." The Encore seemed quite obvious to me by first peeling off the American groups. "The Rascals were from New York" I said to put down that suggestion but we all agreed on '5'. I trotted over to see how my old friends were doing but they had figured it out. On the way I thought about Procol Harum but couldn't see their prog-rock being on the same bill as The Beatles.

Correct Answer:...5. Gerry And The Pacemakers

[NTN Extra Fact:...missed it on the walk back to my table].
I know The Beatles and them had Brian Epstein as their manager. I have a scandal book that I didn't enjoy very much of The Beatles and after getting home flipped through it to review that Brian Epstein carried on (using NTN's term from two weeks ago) an 'alternative lifestyle' with singer Billy J Kramer and many others (it wasn't Gerry Marsden after all as I thought I'd read in this book years before).

We all hold our positions. I finish 12th and 15th on my two boards. The bar finishes 4th in North America with a 35940 average. I earn 3000+ Players Plus points on both boards for meeting this week's 21000 point standard. Rob COSMO wins and finishes 2nd in all North America and knocks my scores down in our bar's Hall Of Fame as he places 1st and 2nd.

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
Player preEncore	Final	Rank	ntn Top 100 rank (restricted to 5 per bar)
COSMO	25858 38787 2 2	2nd on Network Top 20
METLCA	23697 35545 11 21
ROCKET	23670 35505 12 24
CAPER	23391 35087 13 30
LITBOX	23184 34776 15 38
MADDOG	17396 26094	2216
OH YA	12303 13533	5963
ZIGGY	11625 17437	4799
CRANKY	11249 16873	4967
KLOMP 9280	X 6496	8062
OTIS 7448	X 6703	8000

What a team! I must have been boosted by 4000 points and put up their scores a bit too. They wanted to beat the Bull & Firkin although I was sure they'd never meant the gang that split away from our bar to play in the midtown. Non smokers too. I couldn't promise either group that I'd be here next week because I'm driving to Hamilton to see a soccer game but I should be back in time.

Other games:...I start the evening with 1958800 Players Plus points for ROCKET and 224500 for LITBOX.

I wondered how a tie winner would be displayed but it flashed both my boards just like the TuneUp round in Playback.

I walked home and watched the news and when I saw the sportscaster said the hockey was still on in triple overtime, I changed televisions and just as the set was warming up I heard "He scores" so at least I got to see the Maple Leafs winner over the Senators again and again.
