Encore Question of March 16th, 2002.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.

Answers:

  1. Blondie
  2. The Cars
  3. Simply Red
  4. Talking Heads
  5. Siouxsie & The Banshees

Tonight I'm playing with a group of five, Richard BERGIE, Kimmo KAV, Dave COITIS, Bill JOK (after earning over 10 million Players Plus points as MADDOG, tonight he registers a new name) and Marla NOWAY (changing her name each game) all to my left curling around the bar. I'm playing two boards since just past 8:00pm.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp....ROCKET...4500/5000...4th/14...in six or seven way tie.
..........LITBOX...5000/5000...cowins with JOK and METLCA...hey two boards, why not
split a guess?
OnBeat...ROCKET...12250/14000...2nd/14...KAV, NOWAY, ROCKET, LITBOX and COITIS win round.
.........LITBOX...12750/14000...1st/14...our group pulled away from the rest of the bar.
8 right and 1 wrong as we were squeezed into a wrong answer by Shakira's new album being
named 'Laundry Service' yet the closest choice was 'Dirty Laundry' and her single 'Whenever
Wherever'...Don Henley's 'Dirty Laundry' was the correct answer...too bad as Shakira was the
answer to our best win a few years ago.
JukeBox...ROCKET...17386/20000...2nd/14.
..........LITBOX...18352/20000...1st/14...LITBOX wins round...our big group was still
outvoted for some topics.
Triviaoke...ROCKET...20836/28000...4th/13.
............LITBOX...21324/28000...2nd/13...KAV wins round and takes lead. I barely make
20000 stumbling around with many -250s.

The answers come up and I bookmark Siouxsie & The Banshees and Blondie and also remember The Cars as usually I can only retain two choices. I should know this anyway. Richard says '4' but for the last two weeks that's been the answer.

Encore Question:...Money$ Too Tight (To Mention) was the debut single of this new wave band.

.

.

Well no problem this week. After dictating the title I had to blurt out the answer even before reciting the rest of the question. I knew this on many levels having danced with a girl to a remix of this tune from Hannibals/Joe Grinders days before they had NTN. I make sure we're all in and signal to the COSMO/METLCA/CAPER table.

Correct Answer:...3. Simply Red

[NTN Extra Fact:...The group had it's first #1 hit in the US with 'Holding Back The Years'.]

Tonight's song was actually the first song released but 'Holding...' chartered first. 'Money' was actually a cover of The Valentine Brothers song and they were an American soul group so that's why there's references to US President 'Ronnie Reagan's' economic policies. I was on vacation in England in 1985 and stopped by the building of Rough Trade Records in London to ask on the intercom on the gate if English actress Yootha Joyce (tv comedy Man About The House) was the mother of The Smiths drummer Mike Joyce and Simply Red's drummer Chris Joyce but the receptionist didn't know. Mike and Chris are brothers from Manchester. Years later searching the internet revealed that Morrissey just liked English comedies and Carry On movies even putting Yootha's picture on one of The Smiths singles but they weren't related to Yootha. Did I say I had tonight's answer covered?

I'm right and everybody held their position in the bar. I finish 2nd and 4th with 31986 for LITBOX and 31254 for ROCKET. No individual standings were given tonight. The bar is 14th in North America with a 31636 average. I earn 3000+ Players Plus points on both boards for meeting this week's standard of 20000. KAV wins with 32508.

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
Player preEncore	Final	Rank
KAV	21672 32508
LITBOX	21324 31986
COITIS	21189 31783

This game was not a Wipeout as they spent the first few minutes taking a survey about Playback! Wow something we care about. I answered that the games were too difficult. Surprised? Well why should I have to carry a music encyclopedia every Saturday night to have a chance at getting the Encore answer? I enjoyed the questions in the Joe Grinders era more.
