Encore Question of April 28th, 2001.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York.

Answers:

  1. Paul Young
  2. Howard Jones
  3. Robert Palmer
  4. John Waite
  5. Richard Marx

Tonight we're having a terrible scoring game. I'm playing with Richard BERGIE, Doug CRANKY, Bill MADDOG, and Paul ZUKEE who'd just arrived in time to play the Playback game.

The bar is draped with soccer ball looking beach balls hanging from the ceiling for a UEFA Cup promotion but the bar is filled with many Toronto Maple Leaf hockey fans. The team eventually lost 6-5 in overtime but many cleared out after the second period when they were behind 4-1.

My game so far had gone like this:
Tune-Up....4000/5000...7th/16...BERGIE and PDIDDY wins with 5000. I got lulled into a pattern
where every answer was '1' until near the end but 4000 wasn't bad.
OnBeat...7250/14000...8th/16...MADDOG wins round and has 10000. I had 4 right, 3 wrong,
and 2 I didn't answer. This is the start of the season where I can't keep up with the music
news. I'm covering two soccer games a week and it's only the preseason. I'd better get
used to this until October! The bookstores around here didn't get this week's copy of
Billboard magazine in and I only buy it every second week so that put me further behind.
Jukebox...10980/20000...7th/15...PDIDDY wins round and has lead with 17052. I'm not too
popular for completely misreading a question about who Cher had married vs me thinking
it was who she was NOT romantically linked and convincing everyone THEY'D misread the
question. Oops.
Triviaoke...15529/28000...3rd/18...I win this round but PDIDDY is in lead with 17052. A few
-250s but I've done worse. It was just frustrating to know I don't have a chance at 20000
while still in the OnBeat round.

So the question would be something about 1980s singers. I had a feeling this one would be easy after a pattern mentioned on the Playback forum. Well I bookmark Richard Marx and Paul Young and Paul hands me a coaster for a bookmark and mentions Howard Jones.

Encore Question:...Who was the lead vocalist of both The Babys and Bad English?

.

.

Yeah very easy. I don't even wait until the answers come back on before telling our group the answer. Now we've got 30 seconds to wait. Richard returned from the men's room but Doug had already answered for him. Richard knew it too.

Correct Answer:...4. John Waite

[NTN extra fact:...Waite landed his first solo number 1 hit in 1984 with "Missing You".]

I'm right and move up to 2nd place finishing with 23293. I earn 3000+ Players Plus points for making this week's standard of 18000. I finish 130th in North America and our bar finishes 21st according to the highly suspect ranking system this week [The NTN site later in the week put us at 31st]. PDIDDY wins the game with 23873 by Final Jeopardy strategy betting. I don't know who this player is but this name was probably created in the last month with the news that Sean 'Puff Daddy' Combs changed his nickname. Just happened that when his name showed up as winning, the music was playing 'Love Don't Cost A Thing' by Combs ex-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez.

It only took 33402 to be best bar tonight as our rivals The Regulars at the Bull & Firkin won the Number 1 bar tonight. A bar score of 23xxx was 20th best so we weren't the only ones who thought the questions were tough.

Here's how the rest of the bar did:
