Encore Question of April 7th, 2001.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.
Answers:
Tonight I'm playing with Richard BERGIE, Dave COITUS, Doug CRANKY, Paul ZUKEE, and Bill MADDOG.
I wore the NTN t-shirt the company sent me from California for being the top ranked eligible player during a Playback game last month. "Play with me" was the shirt logo and the cartoon scene featured a playmaker board with a big crowd in a bar in the background. "Why don't we ever see women like that in here?" I say while my friends look at all the girls in low cut shirts in the cartoon.
I'm drinking diet Cokes tonight rather than beer while I await the results of some medical tests.
My game so far had gone like this: TuneUp...4000/5000...1st/18 in four way tie with BERGIE, COITUS and MADDOG. OnBeat...9750/14000...1st/18...I win this round but don't risk answering the last two questions...I end with 6 right, 1 wrong, 2 not answered. JukeBox...15144/20000...1st/18...METLCA wins round. Triviaoke...18217/28000...2nd/17...COSMO2 wins round...I get about 4 -250s this round so don't get close to 20000 points before the Encore round.
So these answers are are album titles. My book had earlier fallen open at The Lovin' Spoonful and Nick Lowe...
Encore Question:...Which album set a record in 1993 when it had one week sales over 950,000?
Richard BERGIE calls this out as soon as the question comes up. He can remember Toronto celebrating the Blue Jays second baseball World Series championship and the songs playing on the car radio. Ok, I don't have anything better and the timing seems right. Pearl Jam, Mariah Carey, ???????, Meatloaf and Stone Temple Pilots.
Correct Answer:...1. VS.
[NTN Extra Fact:...The Pearl Jam album sold over 5 million copies.]
We're all in for '4'. I was down in Australia for my third and last time in the spring of 1994 and remember the sheepshearers altering the Meatloaf song to "...and I would do anything for love, but I won't SHEAR that...". My book does have an index of the Number 1 albums for any particular week but it doesn't give sales figures on a week by week basis. Later when I had the time I saw that except for Breathless by Kenny G in 1992, the other four albums were all released in 1993. The sales figure may have been mentioned in a recent news story but I said to Richard before the game that Pearl Jam had released 24 more live albums.
I'm wrong and fall only one place to 3rd. I earn only 1500+ Players Plus points for not meeting this week's 21000 standard. PEZMAN wins. Dave asks if I'd like to play Nightsiders or another game because he can change the program from his board. I say it doesn't matter as I go home at 11:00pm. I don't notice but he does program what seems to be the whole week's games but that means the screen blocks out what the Network scores and standings are. Well our bar wouldn't be on there so it doesn't matter.
Here's how the rest of the bar did: Player preEncore Final Rank BERGIE 18760 x 9380 ROCKET 18217 x 9109 COITUS 16476 x 8238 COSMO2 15767 x 7883 MADDOG 15154 x 7577 CAPER 14832 x 7416 PEZMAN 14493 21739 METLCA 13607 x 6803 CRANKY 13314 x 6657 MATT 8036 x 4018 SOB 7863 x 7077 WALLY 7126 x 6413 DUFERS 6645 x 5981 ZIGGY 6216 x 5594 ZUKEE 5893 x 2947 Paul's board acted up the last three rounds. VICKS 4727 x 2363 ZMAN 2962 x 1481 LOOGN 1962 x 981
Other games:...I start the evening with 1372300+ Players Plus points.
8:00pm...Countdown...8793/15000...6th/12...1000+ points...I'm 160th in NA in this small game...bar is 22nd...METLCA wins...my board conks out with two questions to go.
8:30pm...Countdown...12148/15000...2nd/19...2000+ points...no rankings for individuals nor bar...BERGIE wins!
9:00pm...Wipeout...13407/15000...1st/17...1000+ points...I'm 15th on Network Top 20, 30th overall of about 300 players...bar is 8th with an 11967 average.
9:30pm...Wipeout...13194/15000...1st/17...1000+ points...I'm 99th in NA...bar is 68th.
A real team effort helped my scores in all of tonight's games.
