Encore Question of February 10th, 2001.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.

Answers:

  1. U2
  2. The Cure
  3. Steely Dan
  4. Robert Cray Band
  5. Sade

Tonight I'm playing with friends Paul ZUKEE, Richard BERGIE, and Bill MADDOG and we're glad the management has moved the monitor so our end of the bar can see it clearly. I had answered the first question in TuneUp as LITBOX before Paul got here and gave this board to him but he wasn't able to change the name. Richard also had a second board going as GHQ so we could have five boards and control our bar's average if the rest of the players weren't too good. We didn't have a great game but we had the five top spots going into the Encore.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp...4000/5000...4th/15 in a six way tie...SOB wins round at 5000.
OnBeat...9500/14000...2nd/15...six right, two wrong, and one I didn't risk answering...Richard
gives me one that I wouldn't have got otherwise. I'm still making up for missing two weeks of
music news.
JukeBox...15415/20000...1st/15...I win this round.
Triviaoke...20655/28000...1st/15...COSMO wins round.

So the Encore question is about pop groups*. Well we know about these groups don't we guys? I was tipped to look up Robert Cray Band but also bookmarked U2 and The Cure.

*Well I can call Sade a group as I'm one of the few people who own the Sweetback CD by the three guys in Sade Adu's band.

Encore Question:...Who tackled such dark themes as fear and loneliness on the album "Bloodflowers"?

.

.

Well it's not the Robert Cray Band by my book. Richard has called out the answer already. I can't confirm that in my book which only goes up to 1996 but I just say it's not in my book, not that it's wrong. I remember they had a new album a few years ago and try to remember what the message on their t-shirts said when I saw some Robert Smith lookalike Goths at the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) here in Toronto before the afternoon of their concert. I can eliminate 1 and 5 without looking them up.

Correct Answer:...2 The Cure

[NTN Extra Fact:...The Japanese version contains additional material.]

I cost us the victory against The Regulars at their new location by calling out this week's one soccer question wrong. Last week there were reports that in Italy some players had been caught soliciting prostitutes on the Internet so "Sex Scandal" sounded the best but earlier this week their was a story from Italy that there's been a passport scandal with Argentina players being considered Italians by grandfather rules. Next week who knows?

I had a distraction this week as my friend Paul (a non player) brought his girlfriend Julie and another girl Carole whom he was going to introduce to me but they arrived right in the middle of Playback. I said hello and told them I'd be over after the game but in the few minutes I was playing, the girls got into an argument and Carole stomped out. There would have been a few reasons why we wouldn't have been compatible but this was the third event in the last three weeks (two weeks ago a lonely week away on the trip I won to St Maarten at what turned out to be a couples resort and last week, after almost two months of delaying and postponing our first date, confirming that a girl had changed her mind about going out with me) that gets me thinking about my life.
