Encore Question of November 4th, 2000.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.
Answers:
Tonight I'm in the lead thanks to passing The Regulars on the first Triviaoke song which was a Carole King song then just holding on. I'm playing with Richard BERGIE, Kimmo KAV, Bill OH YA, Bill MADDOG, and a couple I'd never seen before BUSTER the woman and CHIMPS the man.
CHIMPS saved us in the JukeBox round with an answer in 'Genres' (I wanted the category '1964'). For kind of music played by Nick Drake. "It's folk music, I just bought his cd" he said. OK, I have no idea. Then he pulls out of his shopping bag of maybe ten cds one by Nick Drake!!! I'd never heard of the artist and it had clearance discount stickers so it wasn't just released. That tops my story of once playing at Joe Grinders and having the background music play the triviaoke song at exactly the same time as the question appeared.
Here's how my game had gone so far: TuneUp....4500/5000...1st/19...I win this round in a tie with TROUT and KELLY. Two 50/50 guesses that went my way helped out. I didn't even see my answers were going up as TIGER but Kim came over to tell me to switch before the name was locked in. OnBeat...12250/14000...3rd/19...BERGIE and ELVIS win round and have lead with 13000. I went 8 right, 1 wrong with Richard's help. JukeBox...16972/20000...4th/19...PLBAAB wins round, ELVIS is almost 1000 points ahead. Triviaoke...24519/28000...1st/19...CHIMPS wins round.
The Encore answers come up. I have a feeling that it will be Tom Waits because they've asked questions about him before. Well I bookmark Tom Waits and Harry Connick Jr as I feel I know the least about them. Not enough time for Randy Newman...
Encore Question:...Who demonstrated his ballroom piano style on songs like "The Heart Of Saturday Night"?
.
.
CHIMPS says it's Tom Waits in the same confident voice as his Nick Drake answer. That's good enough for me. I can't find that song or album listed in my book for Tom Waits nor Harry Connick Jr but I don't change my answer. It couldn't be Billy Joel or I'd have heard of it and .....I'm out of time.
Correct Answer:...2. Tom Waits
[NTN extra fact:..."Closing Time" and "Small Change" are among the acclaimed albums by this gruff vocalist.]
