Encore Question of October 21st, 2000
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York Ontario.
Answers:
Tonight I've taken the lead in the Triviaoke round after the whole bar did poorly in the TuneUp round but both our groups did well in the OnBeat round. I'm playing with Bill MADDOG, Dave COITUS, Kimmo KAV, and two new other guys behind me, FCUK and PJ.
My game so far had gone like this: TuneUp....3000/5000....6 way tie for 5th, FCUK, PJ, MADDOG, KELLY, TIGER win with 3500. OnBeat...12000/14000...2nd/18...MOLSON, KELLY, ROCKET win round with perfect scores. KELLY has the lead. I'm fed three answers from my group and one educated guess. JukeBox...17217/20000...2nd/19...ELVIS wins round. KELLY holds lead with 17611. Triviaoke...24616/28000...1st/19...ELVIS wins round and moves into 2nd place with 24158.
So authors are the answers tonight. I can't spot anything in my book so just wait for the question. I don't know it yet but my microrecorder batteries die out. As I always do, I risk 50%.
Encore Question:...What writer coined the phrase, "Heavy Metal"?
I don't know the answer to this. With about 15 seconds left, Kim MOLSON/VIKING from The Regulars comes over and gives us the answer.

Correct Answer:...1 William S Burroughs
[NTN Extra Fact:...The bands Steely Dan and Soft Machine also derived their names from Burrough's work.
I have at least heard of him as I own video clips of 'Thanksgiving Prayer' and 'Rub Out The Word'. I can't remember them except this old guy's reading poetry off screen with some news footage of him and some house or industrial music.
I'm walking home and realize that there's another origin to 'Heavy Metal'. The dj Kasey Kasem gave credit to John Kay of Steppenwolf in the lyrics "I like smoke and lightning, heavy metal thunder" from 'Born To Be Wild'.
I win with 36924 points. I earn 3000+ Players Plus points for meeting this week's 16000 point standard. I finish 5th on the Network Top 20 Board and 11th overall (although I see ntn.com dropped me to 14th when the late scores came in). The bar finishes 3rd in North America with a 36014 average.
Here's how the rest of the bar did (well initially I saw 12 of us make the top 100 but ends up as only 10). Recreated from the ntn.com site.
