Encore Question of January 22, 2000.
Played at Sweet Cheeks in North York.

Answers:

  1. Stephen Sondheim
  2. Frederick Lowe
  3. Leonard Bernstein
  4. Jerome Kern
  5. Marvin Hamlisch

Tonight I'm playing alone at Sweet Cheeks controlling two boards. I've come here as it's a lot closer to home and the weather is extremely cold. I also wanted to give this place a complete evening to see what it is like. I've got both boards at 20211 points surprizingly after one was up a few points in Triviaoke and the next question by accident I caught up again.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp....4500/5000....1st/2 for both ROCKET and LITBOX.
OnBeat...8500/14000...1st/2 both boards with me getting five right and four wrong.
JukeBox...13751/20000...1st/3 both boards.
Triviaoke...20211/28000...1st/2 both boards.

I put 50% of my points on the line for the Encore question but I don't know much about these composers.

Question:...."Getting Married Today" is a tune written by this master of the musical stage:

Well I don't know this but I wouldn't think that Marvin Hamlisch would ever shake his image for reviving Scott Joplin tunes for the movie "The Sting". For some reason when I see the question written out in block capital letters, I have the feeling that 'master of the musical stage' was an earned title. The song title made me think it was an old tune (who brags about that in these times?). Some feeling keeps me away from Leonard Bernstein [on the way home I'm thinking, 'he was a conductor' which was the wrong logic as my book lists him as composing the songs to West Side Story]. Stephen Sondheim is the most famous of them in modern times, ok that's my first box, Frederick Lowe worked as Lerner & Lowe for musicals, I'll cover Jerome Kern. Perfect, I've got my 1 and 4 split.

Correct Answer:....1 Stephen Sondheim

[Extra Fact from NTN:...It was a Number 1 from Sondheim's 1970 Broadway show "Company".

My extra fact:...Later I looked up this Original Cast album in my music book. It peaked at 176 on the Billboard Album charts and was on the charts for two weeks! Sorry I must have missed that one! I can just imagine the NTN staffers thinking of this one although now my image is of them as Neils and Fraser Crane laughing with wine glasses in their hand and their father angerly saying "C'mon you doily boys, we'll be late for dinner". The cast album had Dean Jones (hey The Love Bug star) and Barbara Barrie says the book but I couldn't say it was one of his biggest plays.

My box ROCKET is right and I finish with 30317 points. That's 62nd in North America and I earn 3000+ Players Plus points for finishing above this week's 20000 point standard. The bar is 1900th in North America. I finish Number 1 on their Hall Of Fame board. I was one turnaround question from making the top 20 which meant turning any OnBeat error from -250 to +1000 and risking 50% would have been an 1875 swing.

Here's how our bar did:
Player.......preEncore......Final.......Rank....
ROCKET.......20211..........30317......62nd.....3000 Players Plus points.
LITBOX.........20211..........10105....6139th....1500 Players Plus points. (yep, one answer makes the difference).

Hey one soccer question: China has never made the World Cup. (obvious they mean the Men's team), I don't get full points as I was caught twice reading a magazine between rounds.
10:00pm...(see above).

Most of the televisions were tuned to the NTN game but the Leaf vs Washington hockey game was on the big screen television. I'd turn around whenever I heard cheering and expected the Leafs won 4 or 5-1 but was shocked to find it ended 5-5. The band this week was a trio named 'Boffo'. They opened up with 'Soul Man' and they sang pretty bluesy even though most of their songs were pop. Guitarist and bassist alternated on songs and a drummer. The guitarist looked like he what the oldest brother in Hanson will look like in 10 years. They had some funny between song banter but how can they entertain only 20 patrons in the entire bar?
