Encore Question of January 15, 2000.
Played at Sweet Cheeks in North York.

Answers:

  1. New York
  2. Los Angeles
  3. Chicago
  4. St Louis
  5. New Orleans

Tonight I am in the lead effectively playing alone and playing two boards with exactly the same score (shows I must have synchronized fingers). I have 19401 points in my first Playback game in four weeks. The holiday season is over and my mother's health has stabilized so I may be able to get back into this and catch up on my web page.

My game so far had gone like this:
Tune-Up....4500/5000....1st/3...ROCKET and LITBOX.
OnBeat....8750/14000...1st/3...five right, 3 wrong, 1 not answered. (now I've got to read up on the current music scene to improve at this).
JukeBox...13682/20000...haha I could vote for any category I liked. 'Cover Story' were album covers rather than songs covered by other artists so I outsmarted myself.
Triviaoke...19401/28000...1st/3.

Last week I didn't play and the question was about jazz. This was about American cities so I put 50% of my points on the line...

Question:....Which city's jazz history is a subject of a Rhino release "Central Avenue Sounds"?

Yike. Another week with a jazz question. Of course I don't know this. Surprize that I've heard about Rhino records this week but because they were going to release a double cd of Devo's greatest hits. I've never been to any of these cities but slowly think that New York streets except for Wall Street [and Park Avenue] most streets are numbers...1st, 5th, 52nd etc. Los Angeles would be the trickiest answer because most folks wouldn't think it had a jazz scene. The quiz writers haven't used '2' as a final answer for more than a year (?). I put ROCKET on '5' for New Orleans and LITBOX on '4' for St Louis. Near the end I switched ROCKET to '3' as there have been some '3' Encore questions recently and Chicago seemed a little less obvious than New Orleans for jazz.

Correct Answer:...2. Los Angeles

I'm wrong even with 40% of the answers covered and both my boards fall to 9701 points. I earn 1500 Players Plus points for not meeting the 15000 point standard. I finish at 2328th in North America and Sweet Cheeks bar is 2030th with only my two boards and two late arrivals. I earn a second place ranking on this bar's Hall Of Fame board which has only about seven entries from last fall which must prove that there are weeks when nobody plays.

Here's how our bar did:
Player.........preEncore....Final.....Rank....
ROCKET.........19401.........9701......2328th...
LITBOX............19401.........9701......2328th...
COOKIE.............3009..........1607......8729th...
PEACH................322............161......9872th...

Maybe these questions could be a little more mainstream? I was late getting out tonight by watching 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' for only the second time. Someone tripped up on not knowing 'One Sweet Day' was the longest running number one song on the Billboard Hot 100. He thought it was 'I Will Always Love You' by Celine Dion (?! oh no, noone corrected him about Whitney Houston). A friend of mine was watching and phoned me as he knew I'd know. The next guy had to leave when he thought Macao was once owned by Great Britain not Portugal. I'd never make it to that far as I couldn't unshuffle the US supreme court justices in four seconds to even qualify!

The first part of the night I was at The Frog & Firkin but my teammates weren't there. I was given one bum machine and then a second one which wasn't much better and cost me 300 points per answer. It's like asking for another board is the greatest imposition you can ask for at this bar so I wasn't going to try a third time. At 9:00pm, I took the subway the two stops, actually closer to home, Sweet Cheeks. I hadn't been here for months since my friend Paul and I were playing and some tough guy sucker punched him while we were leaving. The bar was a lot different as there were now actually patrons. Maybe 40 people here. There was a band playing from about 10:00pm. 'Party Wagon', a quartet, opened with 'Born To Be Wild' but then covered mostly 90s artists like Stone Temple Pilots. They admitted to technical problems and disappeared for the rest of the time I was there.

Other games:
8:30pm...Countdown...5358/15000...6th/11...2000+ Players Plus points...I finish 3330th with this bum board...bar is 18th in North America with a 7476 point average...BELSYZ wins.
9:00pm...Wipeout...-250/15000...1st/1...500+ points...I'm 10000th in North America...the bar is 3001st...I'm in transit through this game and arrive at Sweet Cheeks just in time to sign on halfway through the last question. I've always wanted to do this but I can't see if I've really earned 500 points as I'm a 'yellow plus' visitor to this bar.
9:30pm...SunSports Countdown...9999/15000...1st/3...1000+ points...91st in Southern Ontario...bar is 57th...(the bar I came from finished 5th with MOLSON 19th)...my other board LITBOX has 9922/15000...96th overall.
10:00pm...Playback (see above).
11:00pm...RetroTV...ROCKET...10305/15000...1st/4...1000+...1891st in NA...bar is 1512th in NA.
...................................LITBOX.....10285/15000...2nd/4...1000+...1907th in NA...
