Encore Question of August 21st, 1999.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York.

Answers:

  1. Todd Rundgren
  2. Mitch Ryder
  3. Herb Alpert
  4. Leon Russell
  5. Stephen Stills

Tonight I'm in 11th place (behind 10 boards of The Regulars) with only 18666 points thanks to a poor OnBeat round. The Regular's table had a perfect game into the JukeBox round. I'm playing with Richard BERGIE and Kimmo who didn't start with a board but took over Jeff's LEAFAN when he went off to play pool. I have a second board as Bill (not Bill MADDOG) left before Playback started. I can't operate three boards so Kimmo ends up with LEAFAN.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp....4000/5000....13th/18...9 people tied with 5000.
OnBeat...8500/14000...13th/18...8 people tied with 14000.
JukeBox...12901/20000...12th/18...KELLY wins round and has 19014.
Triviaoke...18666/28000...11th/18...I win this round, KELLY has lead with 23441.

Quite a variety of musicians here. I don't know what the Players Plus standard is tonight but I risk the usual 50%. Richard asked me who Leon Russell was and all I could say was sing a bit of his song 'Tightrope'.

Question:...The Carpenters hit "Superstar" was cowritten by this noted songwriter.

I don't know this. This is every week this year I haven't known the answer and have to guess. It's much harder than it used to be. I know the song well but not who wrote it. Well two boards to play with like the Regulars and the Americans who write me. I use my board to pick Todd Rundgren (I don't know why but his career did start about this time and he is a popular choice for the writers of this game) and the other board as Stephen Stills of CSNY as he might be the type who would write a song like this. Would Herb Alpert as a record executive write a song like this? Richard tells Kimmo to 'pick 4' but earlier in the evening he mentioned the American's '1-4 signature game' theory didn't work.

Correct Answer:......4. Leon Russell

[Extra Fact:..."A Song For You" is another famous Russell song]

I'm wrong and drop to 13th place. I finish with 9333 points which is 6338th place in North America. I earn only 1500+ points for not meeting the Player's Plus standard. The bar is 15th in North America with a 21992 average. Tom PHREDD is one of only four players right and comes from 6th place to be the winner and is 12th on the Top 20 network board. The Regulars split their boards which makes sure one of them wins. That's smart strategy.

The answer to that question is in my music book under The Carpenters and Leon Russell. I think I can see the logic of them asking that question THIS week. The other songwriter was not Richard Carpenter but Bonnie Bramlett of Delaney & Bonnie. Her husband Delaney Bramlett tried to sell George Harrison's guitar at an auction last week but withdrew it when bidding stopped at $100,000.

Last Saturday I was up in Haliburton at a friend's cottage. The Encore answers were: George Michael, BB King, Steve Winwood, Bill Medley, Al Green. The question was: "Your Heart's In Good Hand's" is a 1995 album by this everlasting artist. (I wouldn't have known this, it's not in my music book as it didn't make the Billboard charts but maybe I would have thought of 'everlasting' as Al Green becoming a gospel minister). The bar didn't need me as they finished 8th last week.

Wednesday the 25th I was down at the Canadian National Exhibition and the Toronto Sun SportsZone building had an interactive NTN display. They recruited 20 players for a game from the passers by and I went up to play. It was a 10 question game with this hours game of Toronto Blue Jays sports trivia (oh no, where's the exit?).. The playmakers had a template over the alpha keys and the players names were already chosen. I was RANGERS. I got the first two questions right for 1000 each and hung on to 1st place with a 6034/10000 game. The questions ranged from the manager of the 1999 club to the number of Article XV players lost in the draft of 1996(?!). I won a Pro-Line black sweatshirt that was just my size.
