Encore Question of May 15th, 1999.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York.

Answers:

  1. Buddy Holly
  2. Elvis Presley
  3. Ricky Nelson
  4. Gene Vincent
  5. Chuck Berry

I'm playing with the small group of The Regulars and don't really care that I'm in 2nd place as we've made a deal to go for the top bar score. We've got five boards at a perfect score of 14000 after the OnBeat round. Barry gave me two answers that I don't think I would have guessed. I was the one who knocked his score out when they asked for the name of a recently deceased trumpet player and I said 'Al Hirt' before the choices were given but he thought I said 'Al Pert' as in Herb Alpert which was a choice. Also his boards were acting up. The three of them controlled six boards as there weren't many players here.

The game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp....5000/5000....1st/11...six way tie for 1st.
OnBeat...14000/14000...1st/8...five way tie for 1st.
JukeBox...19950/20000...3rd/11...KELLY and ALKIE have 20000.
Triviaoke...26864/28000...2nd/11...JARVIS wins round.

This was our best score ever but it always comes down to the last question....

Question:...'It Doesn't Matter Anymore' was a 1959 hit by this legend

No problem as I blurt out the answer right in the middle of reading the question into my micro recorder. I have to be first and even start singing the answer in my generic Southern accent impression. It seems so easy that it's Buddy Holly. I suppose the trick is some folks would be fooled by having a Gene Vincent question asked so recently. I have enough time to notice that Richard and Kimmo have come into the bar in the last 15 minutes and have enough time to get over there and get Richard to change from Ricky Nelson.

Correct Answer:.....1 Buddy Holly

[My music book says this song made the charts the week he died. It was written by Paul Anka!].

I finish 2nd of 11 in the bar with 40296. The bar is 1st in North America with a 40135 average!!! I earn 3000+ Players Plus points and pass the 800000 point mark. KELLY wins and is 2nd overall of individual players to 'I ME B' at Spoons in Burbank California with 40957. She makes the #1 spot on the bar's Top 10 Hall Of Fame. The individual rankings are not given and those that I've found are from the NTN. com. The bar has no policy of giving us a round of drinks for winning them continental glory.

Here's how our bar did:
Player.........preEncore........Final............Rank.....
KELLY............26957............40435...............3.....Chris board #1.
ROCKET........26864............40296...............4......
ALKIE.............26755............40133...............6......Chris board #2.
VIKING...........26611............39917..............10.......Kim board #2.
MOLSON........26601............39901..............11......Kim board #1.
JARVIS..........25747............38621...............28.......Barry board #1
OLE JR..........24570............36855...............51...... Barry board #2
ZEDMAN.......13795.............20693.....................Richard takes over board of someone who left earlier.

RUSSKI..........3810.......x.........3048.....................
SJOHNS.............0.........x............0........................
ROYALY..........-250....................0........................

I got here late tonight after being out of town most of the day. I wanted to be here to show everyone I knew here that my photo effort got published in the 'Signs of Insanity' section of Eye magazine, one of the free entertainment tabloids distributed at this bar and boxes around town. It's not too hard to explain but it was hard to see in the dim light of the bar and my caption credit was very small. The only problem so far is the newspaper didn't send me their promised $25 prize.

The picture was taken when I was in Sydney Australia in 1989. This was the method of transportation to get from the northern suburb to downtown which isn't connected by bridge.

I showed the Regulars my credit. Later Kim showed me photos their group had taken on New Year's Eve. I missed it the first time they brought it in. My New Year's photos are still in my camera as I haven't finished the roll. It was nice of them to think of me. I wasn't able to get near my usual place at the bar as it was crowded with strange Maple Leaf hockey fans I'd never seen before. The thing with boxing and now playoff hockey fans is the strangers all disappear once the event is over emptying out the bar. Anyway I invited myself to the Regulars table in time for the local sports trivia game.
