Encore Question of February 13, 1999.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York.

Answers:

  1. Pete Townshend
  2. Elton John
  3. Roger Miller
  4. Elvis Costello
  5. Burt Bacharach

I'm in fourth place coming into this final question. I lost ground in the last two questions of the OnBeat round both -250 answers and never caught up. I did win the JukeBox round but couldn't catch the three regulars leading the pack in Triviaoke. I was playing with BERGIE, KAV (Kimmo for the first time we'd ever got him a board instead of just watching us) and the 'just in time' arriving LEAFAN and ZEDMAN and we were badly positioned to the bar with LEAFAN maybe 20 feet away from me because of other patrons.

My game so far had gone like this:
TuneUp......4500/5000....1st/12...(5 way tie with ZEDMAN, KELLY, JARVIS, and CAD).
OnBeat......9750/14000....4th/12...(3 players win this round, JARVIS has lead with 12250).
JukeBox.....14799/20000....3rd/13...I win this round, KELLY now has lead with 15716).
Triviaoke....21243/28000....4th/14...MOLSON wins round.

We all put 50% on the line for the Encore question which I feel quite confident I'll know when I see these five names. Something that happened quite awhile ago I think.

Question:..."The Iron Man", the musical by ___________ is based on a children's fable by Ted Hughes.

I don't know this right off but I don't think it was Elton John as he'd made a deal just recently with Tim Rice to do another Disney movie like 'The Lion King'. Didn't Roger Miller die? [yes in 1992, however I couldn't think of that now and was thinking of this being something that was just going to be released now]. I've pressed in Pete Townshend despite BERGIE announcing Elton John. I say Pete Townshend but without confidence. I keep hearing the tune by Black Sabbath which isn't helping.
[On my way home I start to remember the animated video clip I saw played on 'Toronto Rocks', yikes it was way back in 1989 before I subscribed to cable and had to rely on local channels 30 and 60 minute video shows a few times a week to watch music]. Two weeks in a row I'm right for the wrong reason!

Correct Answer:....1 Pete Townshend

I'm right and finish with 31865 points but stay in 4th place in the bar. I finish 121st in North America. Ooh second week in a row I'm denied the glory of a top 100 finish and a mention in the official NTN web site. The bar finishes in 15th place with a 31317 average. I earn 3000+ Players Plus points by meeting this week's 17000 point standard.

Here's how the rest of the bar did:

Player................pre-Encore........Final...........Rank......
JARVIS..................22092............33138.............84......
KELLY....................21779............32699.............98......
MOLSON................21953............32383............106...(most impressive performance as he has to restart his game halfway through TuneUp round when his original board went dead!).
ROCKET.................21243............31865............121......
BERGIE..................17985......x.......8993...........7211......
CAD........................17685.............26527...........1775......
OLE JR...................17580.............26370...........1823....(I finally find out that this is JARVIS Barry's back up board, maybe MOLSON should start doing this too).
ZEDMAN................16686......x........8343............7413......
LEAFAN.................14530.......x.......7265............7747......
KAV.........................12567.......x.......6283............8051......
JERK.......................11725...............17587..........4547......
DIDLER...................11215.......x........5607...........8261......
FLAK.........................3235.......x........1617...........9498......
HERO.........................754..................1131...........9649.....

It's mostly my friends that are left high and dry for this question.

Other games:
8:00pm...Countdown...9342/15000...3rd/11...I'm 544th in North America...bar is 187th...I earn 1000+ Players Plus points...CURLY wins.
8:30pm...Countdown...12942/15000...1st/12...I'm 93rd in NA...bar is 322nd...2000+ points.
9:00pm...Wipeout...8900/15000...4th/11...I'm 2620th in NA...bar is 670th...500+ points...BERGIE wins.
9:30pm...SunSportsCountdown...9338/15000...4th/12...I'm 60th in S. Ont...bar is 3rd in Southern Ontario with a 9597 average...BERGIE wins.
10:00pm...Playback (see above).

The 8:30 and 9:00pm games both had 9000 point P+ standards. I couldn't catch it in the Wipeout game. BERGIE and I got through the Sports trivia without LEAFAN and ZEDMAN. A few questions were about Maple Leaf Gardens right here in Toronto which was closing to NHL hockey after tonight. That was the program that was playing on the other television monitors.
